A university offers its students a variety of experiences from which to choose. . . music, drama, pubhcations, athletics, art, fraternities, dorm life. . .and maybe even a little studying. University life is the beginning for the student. It ' s part of a learning process of responsibility, knowledge, experience and involvement in preparation for the world that hes beyond the campus. What every big, little school should have. We wanted new images, new faces, new ideas. We lost progressive professors to administration ' s old-school ways. There was little room for different pegs in this square hole. 10 With Moving In Some 2,000 students returned to EvansviUe this fall. They flew, drove and hitchhiked from locales ranging from the hamlet of Palmyra to the exotic city of Bangkok. They toted water beds, smuggled lids of grass, and all paraphernalia that would make their dorm rooms or apartments seem a little more hke home, their kind of home. Housemothers took the place of nagging mothers and fathers while roommates took roles of mischievious brothers and sisters. Although the facilities are not quite the same as home, frosh soon got used to communal baths and unexpected fire drills. Oh well, life IS a challenge so the good books say and so . . . we ' ve just begun. 13 Jackie This fall, the freshman class was crowded into the PE building for one of the many official welcomes to the U of E. On hand for this occasion were major campus leaders, who canvassed the class for support and interest in their respective organizations. After yet another welcome the freshmen were told to begin developing a class officer slate and to nominate candidates for the queen of the Icebreaker Dance. At the dance the votes were cast and the result . . . Jackie Snyder 1971 Icebreaker Queen Rain During Day . . . Walt Kelly has Pogo . . . and Tom Armstrong has 2-S . The art major from Evansville is the creator of a weekly comic strip that appears in the campus newspaper, The Crescent. 2-S is both the name of the cartoon and its main character — a mop-haired, moustached student with a huge nose. Armstrong combines cartooning abihty with original humor to produce a strip that often touches on various areas on campus: the University ' s new campus in England, final exams, the grading system. Armstrong has also provided editorial cartoons for The Crescent, portraits for the LinC and the new campus magazine, The Catalyst, and art work for advertising in both Crescent and Catalyst. 2-S is not Armstrong ' s first step into the art world; his high school newspaper and yearbook also contain some of his art work. For almost two years he did portraits for customers at a coffee house. ' IT ' S TIME TO PUT THE BITE ON TWO-S THIS WRITER EXPRESSES THE OPINION THAT SCHOOLS ' IN THE UNITED STATES. Highlights included display victories by the Teke ' s and the ChiO ' s, a football kicking contest, and entertainment by the band. Thursday night junior Betty Martin was crowned Homecoming Queen followed by first runner-up Marsha Perigo. Homecoming ended on a perfect note; we won our game. Imaginary Invalid Crew Wins Competition When the cast of the Imaginary Invalid first set November 27 as its opening performance date, they probably couldn ' t foresee that the entire crew would trek to Ford ' s Theatre in Washington, D.C., for two performances in April. The cast was among 22 other schools in its region vying in the American CoUege and University Drama Festival. Regional entrants were from a region that spanned Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and western Pennsylvania. The 22 were narrowed down to six; the Invalid cast was among those selected. The cast then moved on to regional competition in Athens, Ohio where it was one of two chosen to perform at Ford ' s. Drama students leading Moliere ' s French comedy were: Jeannie Smith, Jan Yeiser, Keith Langsdale, Ron Saur, Laurie Butsch, Dave McFadzean, leff Sparks, Tom Shinnaman, Smithy McGinnis, Dave Emge and Cheryl Scammon. Newly-pledged women of the Greek order were presented to actives and alumnae at the 1971 Pledge Presentation Ball. Each woman received her sorority flower as she and her escort passed through the arches of the court. This event, sponsored by Panhellenic Council, attempted to add social status to the university pledging of women. Presentations were made in an aura of worldlmess and Emily Post tradition. 31 Music of Concert Says, It ' s Today In an effort to raise scholarship funds in the music department, Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma Alpha Iota, presented the two-performance Pop ' s Concert--- It ' s Today- The concert featured songs of a troubled society, songs of a troubled people, ---in short songs of today. 32 i. m ' Rhodes ' Firing I ' m different, I come on strong, admits Sheila Rhodes, assistant professor of philosophy at the university since 1969. In the short time she was here, the dark-haired teacher gained scores of disciples. Over 250 of them squeezed into the basement of Hughes Hall to hear Mrs. Rhodes say her teaching contract would not be renewed. The announcement hit the students in different ways; surprise, anger, disgust and mainly confusion. Mrs. Rhodes said she had not been given a reason for her dismissal although Dr. Perkins, head of the Philosophy Dept. said later that she was aware of them. Rumors giving reasons such as profanity in the classrooms , irreverence , massive cultural conflict and alienation of students helped cloud the issue. Mrs. Rhodes left a distinct impression on those who knew her well. She possessed a magnetism that often caused her classes to fill to capacity on the first day of registration for new classes. Musgrave ' s Dance arwick Wins Hearts . . . In the midst of snow and ice came a warm spot. A little bronze bombshell sang her way from San Jose to Evansville and in the process, right into our hearts — most of which were bursting already from a generous portion of Valentine love which we had celebrated all day. From the moment she walked on stage and shot a bird to all who had never heard of Dionne Warwick and her music, until the moment she walked off leaving 6,000 screaming admirers, it was all hers. She quizzed us musically in the popular What Do You Get When You Fall in Love, and then softly told us to Make It Easy on Yourself. Close to You was another easygoing tune which Dionne recorded long before the Carpenters. Sharing the spothght earher, the New Seekers had crooned What Have They Done To My Song. Now Winter Weekend is a warm memory. Moore Hall Wins Top Hon Did you Vote ' ! ' was the by-word of the day as campaigners nagged those entering the union. Out of this confusion and sudden surfaced friendhness came one- a Bachelor of the Year and one- a Basketball Queen. The Queen, blonde and Greek, the Bachelor, moustached andTEKE. Wayne Pickle was chosen from five other Greek and independent men, winning as the 1971 Bachelor of the Year. Pickle ' s female counterpart was Phi Mu ' s Lonna Davis. First to receive a trophy from last year ' s queen Jane was Wayne; who m turn crowned this year ' s queen. Lambda The Big 39 bike race became Lambda Chi Alpha ' s for the seventh time in the eight years the race has been held. The fraternity turned in a time of two hours, two minutes and two seconds, setting a new record for the function, which is held annually during Spring Week. Almost five laps behind was Hughes Hall, which placed second. Sigma Phi Epsilon, the only other organization to ever win the race, finished third. Lambda Chi Alpha was also the first group to ever sponsor two teams in the race; team No. 2 placed fifth. Vicky Cook Chosen Fourth Miss U Of E Vicki Cook, a sophomore from South Bend was chosen as the fourth Miss University of Evansville, Tuesday, May 18. Vicki was chosen from a field of fourteen contestants. She represented the University of Evansville at the Miss Indiana Pageant in July. This was the second time that Vicki strolled the stage at Michigan City. She was Miss Plymouth last year competing against her predecessor from the University of Evansville, Miss Yvonne Short. Chosen as runners-up to Miss Cook, were Lois Meckel, first runner-up, and Paula Gillett, second runner-up. Offered Picnic, Concert This years SGA-sponsored Spring Week was held from May 17-22, and for the first time, offered a whole week of activities to fulfill its title. Starting the week of events was The Beatles: Away With Words , a light show which was held at the Civic Center in downtown Evansville. Tuesday we crowned our new Miss U of E. Vicki Cook was the fourth girl to win the coveted title. Wednesday was set aside to honor those students who have contributed to the university through various academic and extracurricular activities. Thursday the University welcomed Johnny Winter, in concert at the Coliseum. Johnny appeared with friends, Mott the Hoople , and B. F. Trike , a local rock band. Friday, we played in the sun at Audubon Park in Henderson, Kentucky. This was enjoyed by Greeks, freaks and even those who didn ' t participate in the games. Saturday we sat behind Carson Center to see Lambda Chi Alpha capture a seventh bike race victory. And culminating the weekend was a dance that evening in Carson Center, featuring B. F. Trike and The Sausage Mills Blues Band . 49 UE Military Mix It Up At USO Show Despite current disillusionment with the military, the Arnold Air Society and Angel Flight USO Show played to a full audience. Arnolds and angels performed skits, songs and one-liners, poking fun at military and campus situations. 50 51 Music Sets Mood For ' ' Wings of Peace Wings of Peace was the theme of the 1971 Military Balk- an annual affiar attended by both military and civilian couples. Highlighting this year ' s ball was the crowning of the 1971 queen. Senior Pam Gardner, last year ' s queen, presented the tiara to Betty Martin. Present was the charm and enchantment that a formal ball can offer. Low lights and music set the atmosphere for part of the illusion of Wings of Peace. Greeks Spend Day At Audubon Park As the year sped to an end, the Greeks found more ways to keep up the spring fever. This year ' s annual Greek Weekend was held at Audubon Park in Henderson, Kentucky. The brothers and sisters made their way to a day to release their energies on rival chapters. Sporting their Greek-lettered T shirts, the groups managed to tell each other apart, at least until after the competition in games was over. Rooting and screaming of frat brothers and sorority sisters kept competition in the tug-of-war and the dizzy stick race in a tension that only Greek men and women can experience. 54 Department The last play of the school year with John David Lutz as director was the musical, ' Threepenny Opera. This was the first attempt by the department at a musical production and the cast performed with an air of experience The musical, is based on the story of Macheath a swindler and robber, who gets caught at his games of crime. Playing the lead role was Keith Langsdale, giving a fine performance, acting as well as singing. Other leads in the musical were Jan Yeiser, Liz Wagner, Dave Emge, Darla Himmelheber, Tom Shinnaman, Peggy Overman and Jeannie Smith. Giving the narration of the play was Dave Westfall, who also sang the famous, Mack the Knife . 58 Anti-War Rally Sparks Arrest Of Two 60 What happened to the campuses this year? Why no mass riots and kiUings hke those of last year? On the average there were decidedly fewer incidents uprooting college campuses m the 1970-71 school year. However, those which Evansville did have turned out to be enough for a big, little school. Wednesday, May 5, an anti-war rally was held on the front lawn of the University. The crowd was made up of campus freaks faculty, and those who wished to pay tribute to the four students who were killed at Kent State last spring. With speeches beginning at 9:30 a.m. the crowd had already been infiltrated by many local high school students who felt the cause was just as important to them. By early afternoon the crowd dispersed on a walk to the Civic Center complex in downtown Evansville, where two high school students were arrested. The two were abusing the $12,000 fiberglass fountain. Students Hear Soul Jazz As part of the city-wide Black Culture Week , we took time out from studies to listen to the Dave Baker Jazz Ensemble. The event was held in Harper ' s Dining Center, in May. The music poured from Baker ' s trombone and the students were under the spell of the jazzman ' s beat. Baker and his five other jazz partners have done numerous concerts in and around the Evansville area. When the event was over, we went back to our dorm rooms, apartments, and living rooms, only to find that we were still haunted by the soul-swinging jazz beat. 62 A Year Of What can you say about a year at the U of E, that hasn ' t already been said last year, and the year before that? We came through with tradition again, and brought the students some of the same activities, no matter how dull or boring they might have become by now. We crowned three campus beauties, Betty Ma rtin, Lonna Davis, and Vicki Cook. We had another Spring Weekend and still couldn ' t get enthused. We heard Johnny Winter in concert and many asked, who ? What makes this year any better? We elected our first hippie SGA president, in a close election. Joe White became our leader with hopes that U of E could be bettered by a long hair . We brought back a revised Musical Madness, and watched as Moore Hall won the competition, even though skits could be the work and excellence of two groups. The drama department came through with a prizewinning performance. National Fame Imaginary Invalid ' s cast and crew brought the campus nation-wide fame when they won the regionals in the American College Theatre Festival, and the right to perform in Ford ' s Theatre, in Washington, D.C. National fame also came when the Aces won their fifth national collegiate basketball championship. When opening season started as another year for the Aces , the team fought for the chance to get into the national finals. When they did, we didn ' t stop our fast paced playing. And still again we won national recognition, when the media heard of our England campus. Beginning in the fall of 1971, the University will hold classes in Harlaxton Manor in Grantham, England. Dionne Warwick highlighted the year when she sang a Valentine ' s Day concert. These events made 1971 at least a little different from, 1970, 1969, 1968, etc. 65 Louis T. Benezet Addresses Graduates On June 13, the University held its 113th annual commencement. Roberts Municipal Stadium was the setting for the graduation of 708 students. Before the presentation of diplomas, Dr. Louis T. Benezet, President of the State University of New York at Albany, spoke to the graduates on the subject of ' ' The Education of Hope . 66 m Before The Rising Sun, We Fly o So Many Roads To Choose i i Kappa Alpha Psi Left to Right: Dave McDade, Irving Graves, Marvin Cooper, George True brotherhood, no false faces here. France, Cleo Walker, Stan Guynn, Charles Reynolds, Willie Wash- The pledges and actives of Kappa Alpha Psi ingtoa, James Robinson know the meaning of true soul. Influenced by their sense of fellowship, these men, although few in number, are great in spirit. Sporting the shield of Kappa Alpha Psi, pledges feel the real meaning of their fraternity. Brotherhood? Yes, the brotherhood of men. 72 Alpha Omicron Pi First Row; Pam Lindsay, Yvonne Sliort, Garlene Painter, Leah Loughrie, Mary Prince, Georgeonn Griffith, Susan Schroeder, Nancy Gerber, Meredith Potter, Jane Carhle, Karen Daily, Janet Pem- berton, Judy Allen, Paulette Tacoma. Girls with a big smile and a big heart — the AOPi ' s. This year the sisterhood has grown and gained new experiences through their Philanthropic Project. Their giving Old to the Arthritis Foundation has also given them a sense of importance and signif- icance. The AOPi ' s also gave food to the needy through the success of their Jesse James Kidnap project. So giving are the AOPi ' s that they gave us Yvonne Short . . . The Zetas share a pride in the turquoise and grey, and belonging to the five point crown. Known nationally as ' ' angels , they prefer their campus nickname as turtles . But the campus name is fooling, for their honors never come slowly. Top singing honors were grabbed in University Sing. New pledges discovered that physical harassment was merely a thing out of the past . Plans began circulating for some type of new housing, hopefully fire-proof. Concern for others was made prominent when the SAE brothers donated money to charity instead of building a homecoming display. 80 81 Phi Mu Women of the pink and white pod serve their community as well as their sisterhood. Even though Phi Kappa Tau, the youngest fraternity on campus, has proven itself capable of survival among long-existing groups that surround it. Its members easily learn the meaning of unity. 90 91 i I We Start Out Walking And Learn To Run . . . 94 1 A year of surprises highlighted the 1970-71 varsity athletic competition for the Aces. First, Coach Jim Byers ' gridiron squad breezed through an undefeated conference season barely missing a bid to a post-season bowl game. Coach Arad McCutchan ' s cage Aces were number one as they won a fifth national title. In other varsity sports, the Aces managed conference champ- ionships in swimming and tennis. On the intramural side, the annual Tau Kappa Epsilon-Lambda Chi Alpha All-Sports battle continued with the TKE ' s winning. Phi Kappa Tau made it an interesting three-way race by winning two sports titles. On the women ' s side, the independ- ents continued to dominate as Moore Hall edged out the UEI ' s for the women ' s title. And, Yes, We ' ve Just Begun. 95 Aerial-Minded Aces Compile 6-3 Season; Win ICC Led by a versatile offense and a staunch defense, the 1970 pigskin Aces went undefeated in Indiana Collegiate Conference competition and fell one victory short of a berth in the post- season Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. All three Aces losses were inflicted by larger state schools. Offensively, the Aces were led by little All-America end Pete Rupp and I.C.C. most valuable player, quarterback Craig Blackford. Both are seniors. Blackford was drafted 13th by the National Football League Denver Broncos. Far Left: Craig Blackford hurls a completion against Murray State, Left: Fullback Bob DeLuca fights off a tackle against the Pumas. Top Right: Defensive back Mike Esorey breaks up a pass against DePauw. Right; All-Americon end Pete Rupp was not able to hang on to the ball before being upended. Lower Right: An unidentified Aces defender prevents a completion against DePauw. Defensively, linebackers Spike Bell and Gerald Seib, tackle Keith McKinney and guard Steve lerardi thwarted opponent ' s offensive drives with key tackles and timely interceptions. The Aces met the undefeated Pumas of St. Joseph ' s College m the I.C.C. championship game. The game began with an electrifying 97-Yard opening kickoff return by Aces half- back Doug Atherton. The Aces went on to edge the Pumas 23 to 15. One of the most stinging losses occurred at Ball State, where the upset-minded Aces lost to the Cardinals 21 to 14 before a homecoming crowd of 18,000. The team was led by freshmen Geoff Gooch and Chuck Cooksey. The runners placed fourth m the ICC conference meet which was won by Valparaiso. The Aces did manage victories m duel meets against Kentucky Wesleyan and Northwood Institute. The runners do not receive financial aid for participating m cross-country while other conference schools do award scholarships. Aqua Aces 102 Regain Swim Crown The Aqua Aces regained the ICC swimming title by decisively defeating reigning conference champion Valparaiso and also DePauw. Enroute to regaining the ICC crown, which they had lost by twelve to Valparaiso a year earlier, the Aces tankmen won eight events and set three ICC records in the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard butterfly while freshman Steve Claus eclipsed the 1 ,650 yard freestyle record. Coach Dick Schleicher ' s Aquatic Aces qualified two men for the NCAA College Division Swimming Championships which were held in Springfield, Massachusetts. Senior Bruce Brink qualified in his speciality, the backstroke, while Bruns swam in the butterfly. 103 Evansville Aces NCAA Champions 1971 104 106 And, Yes, We ' re Number One! Hampered by injuries and the untimely departures of junior college transfers, the Aces limped through a long December looking for the right floor combination. On their Eastern tour they managed a split by defeating American International College before losing to nationally-ranked Assumption. After winning only four of their first nine games and finishing second in their own Holiday Tournament (to Weber State), the cagers faced the brunt of the Indiana Collegiate Conference schedule. Coach McCutchan, searching for the right combination started John Wellemeyer, Bob Clayton, Rick Smith, Don Buse and Rick Coffey against Ball State. In making this change, the Aces were forced to give up height for more balanced scoring. (After the move, the tallest starter was 6 ' 5 .) This move led to a victory over Ball State and a seven win, one loss record during the month of January. Key victories during the month were against Butler, DePauw and traditional rival Southern Illinois University. The only loss during the month was at Indiana State. Following their strong January showing, the Aces were temporarily stalled when they were soundly defeated by an inspired Kentucky Wesleyan five at Owensboro 102-81. Following the loss, the Aces bounced back to defeat ICC foes St. Joseph ' s, Valparaiso, Butler and DePauw. Following these victories the Aces gained revenge by defeating Indiana State University at the Stadium 90-83. After going undefeated in ICC play and posting a 17-8 season record, the Aces were invited to host the Great Lakes Regional of the NCAA College Division tournament. In their first round draw, the Aces met the highly rated, defense-oriented Eagles from Ashland College of Ohio. The Aces were rated underdogs to the tough Bill Mussel- man crew. After carving out an eight-point victory (82-74) over the poised Eagles in the game of the tournament, the Aces coasted in the regional championship by defeating Central Michigan 78 to 60. Guard Don Buse was selected the most valuable player of the tournament and teammates John Wellemeyer and Rick Coffey were also on the all-tournament team. Evansville hosted seven other teams for the finals of the NCAA College Division tourna- ment. The Aces were slated against the Northeastern Regional Winner, Hartwick College of New York in the first round. The New York crew was completely humiliated and humbled by the vast confines of Roberts Stadium and the polished Aces 105-69. 111 112 Excite Spirit Thru Many Victories 4 • f 1 13 It Was Less Expected Than The Oth Arad McCutchan Head Coach In the semifinals, the Aces were paired with tournament favorite Southwestern Louisiana State and the nation ' s leading scorer, Dwight Lamar. Aces defensive magician Don Buse completely inhibited the classy Lamar while the remainder of the Aces held their own against the tail Cajuns 93 to 74. (SWLS starting lineup averaged 6 ' 6 .) Senior Bob Clayton played a key role in the Aces victory by controlling the backboards while senior John Wellemeyer added some key scoring. In quest of McCutchan ' s fifth NCAA Championship before an overflowing house of over 13,000, the Aces met Old Dominion University of Norfolk, Virginia in the championship. Led by an 18 point first half scoring performance by Coffey and key defensive play by Don Buse and Greg Martin in the second half, the Aces presented coach Arad McCutchan a national championship 97-82. Don Buse was selected as the tournament ' s most valuable player. Both Buse and Coffey were selected to the all-tournament team. For McCutchan, the championship climaxed his 25th year as head coach of the Aces. He was later quoted as saying this was his most satisfying championship because it was less expected than the others. Leading the Aces in hitting were Steve Welmer (ICC all-star team member), Don Buse and Jim Hostetler. Coach Beck came to the University in the faU of 1947, after five years m the United States Navy, from which he was discharged as a Commander. As his first assignment at the university, he was Assistant Head Football Coach, under Donald Ping. He remained m this position, until 1954, when he was made head football coach. Beck coached the Aces for twelve years as head coach until 1966, when Jim Byers, the present head coach, took the position. Mr. Beck has also helped with the coaching of basketball and golf. During the 24 years, he was also a physical education professor. In 1959, Beck was raised to associate professor, and held that title until he retired this spring. 125 Sharing Horizons That Are New To Us 126 A teacher often wears many hats besides that of merely instructor of an academic subject. Many find themselves moonlighting, performing dual functions within the university framework. Teachers who could be counted on in times of trouble, fear or loneliness; teachers who radiated a true concern for a student ' s progress in a class; teachers who would attempt to step down from the ' pedestal and talk with students rather than at them. A university is like a complex machine. Before a machine can perform its work, all of its component parts must likewise be in smooth, working condition. Each individual part is vital to the machine ' s function; the loss of one part. . . no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. . . often upsets the machine ' s balance. Campus organizations are likewise vital to a university ' s bloodstream. A color wheel of activities helps provide students with a strong social diet. They learn the meaning of the word unity; they learn to work together. . . . Together 193 NCAS, the National Collegiate Association for Secretaries, organized for the purpose of furthering the interests of students in the fields of secretarial science and business education. While NCAS offered those in the business field with interesting activities, the SEA, or Student Education Association, planned activities for those in the education field. Faculty teas, talks, conferences and tours highlighted the year for the future teachers. For those students planning to enter the field of advertising, retail sales, marketing and business management the business department offered the services of the fraternity of Pi Sigma Epsilon. The marketing, management, and sales fraternity. Ken Sobbe - Pi Sigma Epsilon It was a busy year for the Administrative Management Society as they planned educational and social events for the majors and minors in the fields of engineering, economics and business administration. Capping the year ' s activities was their banquet at the Topps Restaurant in Evansville. Frank Kanowski Administrative Management Society 194 Members of the Association for Childhood Education (ACE), seek to work for the education and well-being of children, ages two to twelve. Membership in the group provides students with a further insight into the area of teaching elementary school children. 195 They ' re called the Aquacades, their habitat is water and swimming is their game. The group, formerly known as the Aqua Angels, annually put on a water show in the Carson Center pool. The wet ballet involves skits and synchronized swimming. Aquacades With emphasis on creativity, talent and scholarship, the University boasts of its Beta Xi chapter of Kappa Pi. Kappa Pi is an international art honorary promoting greater interests in the art world, on international, national and local levels. This year the chapter sponsored a faculty raffle of original art pieces from each member of the art faculty. Jean Hergenrother and Margie Hinder - Kappa Pi 196 The women ' s lib movement has invaded the PE department in the form of the Women ' s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Association, (WHPER). The group is made up of women who seem to feel that men aren ' t the only ones who can excel in the field of athletics. A football game without cheerleaders is like a fraternity without beer, a nun without a religion, and a song, without music. The function of cheerleaders has simply been said to cheer. But the quintet does more; they care, are always there. Vicki Katterhenry leader Captain Che It might be French, but the homework looks like Greek to the student. But, there ' s always the fringe benefits, . . .the parties Le Circle Francois hold, while the lands of bullfights are discussed by students in the Spanish Club. Both clubs seek to familiarize their members with the customs, people and languages of respective countries. 197 Flora Young - Alpha Lambda Delta Freshmen women who have registered for a full student load and have attained a 3.5 grade point average during their freshman year are eligible for membership in Alpha Lambda Delta, freshmen womens ' honorary. The goal of Alpha Tau Delta, the nursing honorary, is to form a strong bond of friendship among women m the nursing profession. Jan Patterson Alpha Tau Delta Mike Young - Arnold Air Commander 196 Interfraternity Council coordinates fraternity activities on campus. The group helps organize rush for men interested each spring and fall in pledging any of the six fraternities. The group usually sponsors a dance in conjunction with rush activities. The council operates with its own officers. Each of the six fraternities also elects delegates to serve as representatives on the council. With representatives from each of the sororities, Panhellenic Council strives to co-ordinate all the activities of Greek women. Encouraging good scholarship and high standards of conduct, they concern themselves with rush, pledging and initiation. This year the organized women decided to form a Junior Panhellenic Council. This counc il is composed of representatives from each of the sororities ' pledge classes. They concern themselves with the projects of these respective pledge classes. Betsy Burwash Councii Junior Panhellenic Chuck Stonehill - Interfraternity Council Bob Clayton - Senior Class Mark Miller - Freshman Class Students gam representation m Student Government Association ' s Student Senate when they elect class officers in the spring. As student senators, the class officers vote on legislation and review campus policies and proposals such as a projected teacher-course evaluation. Class presidents for 1970-71 were: junior, Mike Berg, sophomore, Madelyn Creedon, freshman, Mark Miller, and, senior. Bob Clayton. 201 Music lives forever and so do the friendships gained in the sisterhood and the brotherhood of Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Mu Alpha. These two honoraries were for those music students who wished Rounding out the music program at the University were the choruses of the music department. Three of the groups were formed by audition while the other two were open to all interested students. Auditions were taken for Chamber Chorus, offered through the evening college; the Choral Ayres, a group which performed pop to Bach; and the University Choir which was the figurehead of the choruses. The Chapel and Campus Choirs required only that the student was willing to sing. Doris McFadin - Sigma Alpha Iota 203 The American Chemical Society is a professional organizahon for chemists and chemical engineers, on the college level. The group offers monthly programs including speakers and plant tours of interest to students. Kappa Mu Epsilon mathematics honorary, can sum up its purpose in one statement: Unfold the glory of mathematics. The mathematics group sponsored its own week of activities, climaxed by a banquet at the Homestead. Both faculty and students comprise the membership roster of Phi Beta Chi natural sciences honorary. The purpose of the honorary IS to honor those students who have attained a high scholastic average in the natural sciences. Wayne Roell - Kappa Mu Epsilon - Phi Beia Chi If Larry Hancock - American Chemical Society 204 Its purposes are scientific, literary and educational. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is directed toward the advancement of electrical engineering, electronics, radio and allied branches of engineering. In the physics honorary, Sigma Pi Sigma, all members are required to have completed 30 or more hours of physics. This 30 hours includes study of E = mc - and velocity and speed of light and !V2%. 205 Pi Gamma Mu is an honorary organization for social studies majors and minors. This society gave recognition to those who had done outstanding work in social studies. Another organization which stressed the importance of achievement was Psi Chi. This organization promoted the advancement of pyschology and helped to encourage and to stimulate scholarship in all other fields. 206 A fashion show in Harper Dining Center featured casual, formal and beach wear designed by a young, black Evansville high school student. The show was part of a city-wide Black Culture Week. Young blacks from the University campus and the Evansville community modeled the original designs while pop music was provided by a live combo. The fashion show was one of the few formal programs held in the dining center all year. It provided students a peek at part of a culture they might not have been familiar with. This is the type of activity that the Sociology Club was stressing this year. Trent Tucker - Sociology Club 207 Dave Emge - Alpha Psi Omega Students with talent for drama and playreading blossomed forth in various readings by the Reader ' s Theatre and membership in Alpha Psi Omega, national drama honorary fraternity. Among Reader ' s Theatre contributions was the spring reading of Dylan Thomas ' Under Milk Wood . Hours of rehearsals, memorization of lines, set designing, and costuming, culminated in induction into Alpha Psi Omega for some. Linda Evinger - Newman Center 208 Varied activities were sponsored by the University Christian Movement. Students were given the opportunity to test their beUefs in action, and through this inter-action a strong fellowship of men and women resulted. Newman Center also continued to be the haven for those wanting to attend Mass, meet for confession or counseling with the resident priest. Ray Young - Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship Preparation for hfe and instilling Christianity into their goals continued to be the objectives of members of Kappa Chi. The honorary fraternity sponsored a panel discussion on whether or not there is life after death. Representatives from the University campus and the Evansville community expressed their beliefs. Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship also provided students a chance to read and discuss the Bible. 209 The Nifty Nine, black women ' s social sorority, concerned with the community and the social life on campus, this year gave the U of E a sense of importance. In order to aid the communication of events on campus, Residence Hall Council has been established as a needed medium used by several other service organizations. The purpose of the Associated Women Students is to provide the women on the campus with lifelong helpful programs. Black Student Union got it all together this year in an effort to provide more stimulating events- social as well as cultural. James Wilson - Black Student Union 210 After several meetings of the Union Programming Board and Student Government Association, a bond was agreed upon for the 1971-72 school year. Beginning next year the two most active groups on campus will merge into what will be known as the Student Association. However, the Union Board will continue to function as the only social programming board on campus. The president of Union Board will become the S.A. vice-president of student activities. Along with four other vice-presidents he will serve under the president of the Student Association. The merger also included several of the smaller service organizations. They weren ' t used to the early fire drills, their own clean-up jobs and bothersome roommates. But, by the end of the year, they got used to the early morning get togethers, the cluttered rooms, and roommates became inseparable. They couldn ' t get this type of living at home, and they found it a unique experience.
