900 Webster m IN APPRECIATION In 1928, a young Evansville College graduate was appointed business manager of the school. In November, 1963, that same man celebrated his 35th anniversary as business manager of Evansville College. Ralph Olmsted ' s years of association with Evansville College, as the student, a faculty member and an administrator, have been filled with many firsts. He enrolled as a freshman in 1919, the first year classes were held at E.G. In Octo- ber of that same year he played a major role in establishing the school newspaper, THE CRESCENT. He served as the first editor of the paper. In his junior year, he was instrumental in publishing the first LinC. Mr. Olmstead was editor of the first yearbook published in 1922. As vice president of the Student Government Association (he served two consecutive terms in this office), he was a member of the court that tried the first two cases of cheating under the College ' s Honor System. Upon his graduation from E.C. in 1923, in a class of 23, Mr. Olmsted began teach- ing at Cynthiana High School. He spent his summer as a reporter for the Evansville Courier and taught for a year at Central High School. In 1925 he returned to the College as the first instructor of journalism. Three years later he was appointed busi- ness manager. Through these many years, Mr. Olmsted has made numerous contributions to the growth and development of Evansville College. His tireless work has helped to build the school that exists today, and he will continue to be an important part of many future events concerning E.C. Mr. Olmsted has been a catalyst in many projects undertaken by the school, and has established an efficiency in his department that would be hard to equal. He has not just shuffled papers and kept books, however. He has taken a truly personal interest in helping young people. He has displayed understanding and confidence in students when many people have rejected them, commented Robert Rowland, assistant to the president in charge of public relations and development. Edgar McKown, director of religious life, a close friend of Mr. Olmsted ' s since their college days at E.G., said, Since 1919, Ralph has been related to the College, except for two years, as a student or staff member. In a real sense he is Mr. Evansville College. To many, many people, though, he is just Ralph, a warm-hearted, highly respected friend. To Ralph E. Olmsted, who truly can be called Mr. Evansville College, we dedi- cate this 1964 LinC, as an expression of our sincere appreciation for his constant efforts and continued loyalty to Evansville College. A job well done, Mr. Olmsted.
