LinC of Evansville College 1964 Volume XLII Lin stands for Lincoln, the avenue wide On which fronts the campus, the field of our pride. C means not only the College we praise — The school we will love throughout all our days — But Clifford, the father, a true pioneer Who blazed out the way with a vision clear. LinC read aright, Life in College appears, Love in College translate it, if that suits your years. But though C stands for College and Culture, ' til true, ' Tis the first part of City, Community, too; And while we LinC up each year to the past. Forging a chain that will hold us all fast. We mean to LinC, also, our life here in school To life in the world — though opposed to all rule — That we may give freely of our very best To the City which touches our doors on the west, And that it in its turn may teach us to know How to best serve our fellows as through life we go. Thus of whatever phase of our College we think. It is all to be found in the one word — the LinC. Wahnita DeLong This poem was written in 1922 for the first LinC ever published. Wahnita DeLong was an English teacher and later became Dean of Women. This book was edited by Ralph E. Olmsted, who is now College Business Manager. : - ■;.■■■' ' $ :. ■- a ■' ■' ■■' ■' ■-■X- 1 ' , Lin 1964 .- • - - ' . In November, 1963, that same man celebrated his 35th anniversary as business manager of Evansville College. Ralph Olmsted ' s years of association with Evansville College, as the student, a faculty member and an administrator, have been filled with many firsts. He enrolled as a freshman in 1919, the first year classes were held at E.G. In Octo- ber of that same year he played a major role in establishing the school newspaper, THE CRESCENT. He served as the first editor of the paper. In his junior year, he was instrumental in publishing the first LinC. Mr. Olmstead was editor of the first yearbook published in 1922. As vice president of the Student Government Association (he served two consecutive terms in this office), he was a member of the court that tried the first two cases of cheating under the College ' s Honor System. Upon his graduation from E.C. in 1923, in a class of 23, Mr. Olmsted began teach- ing at Cynthiana High School. He spent his summer as a reporter for the Evansville Courier and taught for a year at Central High School. In 1925 he returned to the College as the first instructor of journalism. Three years later he was appointed busi- ness manager. Through these many years, Mr. Olmsted has made numerous contributions to the growth and development of Evansville College. His tireless work has helped to build the school that exists today, and he will continue to be an important part of many future events concerning E.C. Mr. Olmsted has been a catalyst in many projects undertaken by the school, and has established an efficiency in his department that would be hard to equal. He has not just shuffled papers and kept books, however. He has taken a truly personal interest in helping young people. He has displayed understanding and confidence in students when many people have rejected them, commented Robert Rowland, assistant to the president in charge of public relations and development. Edgar McKown, director of religious life, a close friend of Mr. Olmsted ' s since their college days at E.G., said, Since 1919, Ralph has been related to the College, except for two years, as a student or staff member. In a real sense he is Mr. Evansville College. To many, many people, though, he is just Ralph, a warm-hearted, highly respected friend. To Ralph E. Olmsted, who truly can be called Mr. Evansville College, we dedi- cate this 1964 LinC, as an expression of our sincere appreciation for his constant efforts and continued loyalty to Evansville College. A job well done, Mr. Olmsted. . w.; e- §jUpta ' ■' ' ■tJiM mU i ■■r, , ; . ;i J ..fe £ti ;i IKSS K? M £ $ ' . Angel Flight and Arnold Air Society combined their talents on many projects this year. Two major activities, however, consumed most of their time. The Military Ball took many long hours of plan- ning and preparation from members of these groups. The National Conclave of their groups was held in March and both groups spent several months raising money to send representa- tives to the meeting in Denver, Colorado. Evansville College Theatre opened its forty- first season with a production of William Shake- speare ' s Twelfth Night. Perhaps Shakespeare ' s funniest comedy, Twelfth Night concerns a young noblewoman, Viola, who disguises herself as a man in the serv- ice of Orsino, Duke of Illyria. The Duke sends Viola to his love, Olivia, with hope of persuad- ing her to marry him. But Olivia, who knows Viola as the servant Cesario, falls in love with the disguise. This case of mistaken identity results in many hilarious situations. A sub-plot is found in the revenge of Olivia ' s servants on her surly steward, Malvolio. The serv- ants write a letter for Malvolio to find which makes him sure that Olivia is in love with him. Malvolio ' s strange behavior as a result of his mis- taken belief causes him to be considered mad by all those who are not in on the joke. 73 A king presents a crown to the Christ child, being held by Mary, as Joseph and two angels look on. EAGER HEART Eager Heart. Evansville College ' s annual Christmas play, was presented for the 35th consecutive time December 15, 1963. The play was written shortly before World War I by A. M. Bucton, author of Beauty and the Beast. 1 ' It was presented for the first time in 1928 by- Miss Pearle LeCompte. The play deals with a current lack of concern for the true meaning of Christmas and the loss of a true belief in Christ. The subject of the play is the annual visitation of the Holy Family in the form of a medieval mystery-morality play. The mystery appears in the examination of the Christmas story, while the morality element is in the form of a conflict between Eager Heart, who is the only one to offer shelter to the strangers at her door, and Eager Sense and Eager Fame. While all wish to honor the Child, Eager Heart is the only one to hear the call of truth over the senseless blare of festival. Dudley Thomas, co-head of the speech and drama department, was director of the production. Dudley Thomas and Duane Campbell compare notes as Jim Butler and Jim Pope rehearse their lines. 74 E. C. Features Questions on Faith The 1963 Campus Conference on Christian Living featured the Reverend Richard Hamilton of Indianapo- lis. Daily services, informal discussion sessions, a Retreat and a Vesper service comprised the week ' s program. The general theme for the Conference was Questions on the Way of Faith. Reverend Hamilton, pastor of St. Luke ' s Methodist Church in Indianapolis, graduated from Central High School in Evansville. He is considered one of the out- standing vounsf ministers in Indiana. Reverend Hamilton led an informal discussion in Hughes Hall, one of three such meetings held during the Conference. Members of MSM and other interested students took advantage of mealtime to ask questions of Reverend Hamilton, and to discuss topics covered during the Conference. 76 Freshman Great Books and Organ Concert Highlight November The first of four dedicatory organ concerts on the new pipe organ in Wheeler Concert Hall, featured Carl Staplin, who teaches organ and theory at E.C. The $45,000 organ, which weighed 14,000 pounds, was received disassembled. The organ was used for recitals, teaching, and ac- companying college choral productions. Carl Staplin was the featured organist at the first dedicatory organ concert in Wheeler Concert Hall. A series of book reviews entitled Freshmen Great Books, was presented twice each quarter. Cap and Gown Senior Women ' s Honorary Organization was the sponsoring group for the lectures. The Lonely Crowd, The Last Days of Socra- tes,-The Aims of Education, Areopagitica and of Education, The Abolition of Man and the Gospel of St. John were reviewed by Dr. Paul Brabill, head of the English department. Antigone, though timeless, has a didactic purpose: to teach the heartlessness of men to their fellows. Ingenious blending of contemporary staging with explo- sive lighting;, cuttings from the recording; La Creation du Monde, costumes designed and constructed by students and a fine cast add up to a successful production. Marcia Bennett in the title role of Antigone, the barefoot, humble innocent, won the Sammy award for her portrayal. If our pictures failed to turn out, Mr. Hart- man came to the rescue, and occasionally the situation was reversed. I ' m especially grateful to Steve Loewenkamp and Steve Halbig for their work on the Sports Section. These two fellas came to the rescue and possible prevented a major crisis. If it hadn ' t been for their willingness to work, even late at night, we might have had a girl sports editor! Thank you is not enough to say to the American Year- book Company and their representative, Bob Sakel, for the many pains caused them. But, unfortunately, thank you is about the best I can say. I sincerely appreciate their kindness and understanding for my many mistakes. They never lost their tempers, which is more than most of us can say. The photographers were the greatest when it came to taking and printing pictures Often my demands seemed impossible, but these frequently forgotten heroes managed to come through with just what I asked for each time. Most of the time photographers receive very little credit, especially in a book of this type, so I would like to take With this year ' s Line I have tried to create a basic book which fu- ture staffs can use as a foundation. I sincerely hope that in my effort I have not overlooked anyone and that I have presented all the events possible in the number of pages allowed. The one thing that is noticeably missing from this book is color pic- tures. We have used a two-page color spread in the beginning that we think depicts E.C. at its best, in both fall and spring, in the beginning and the end of each year. In dedicating this book to Ralph Olmsted, we feel that we have picked the person who, possibly more than anyone else, represents Evansville College and all that it stands for. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who have worked so hard to put together this Line. A special thanks goes to each staff member and editor for the hours of hard work and for their endless patience. I would like to personally thank Anne Pampe for her work as Campus Editor. Through her efforts we have pictured many groups in this book that have been missing from yearbooks of the past. A special thanks goes also to Paul Hartman, Assistant Director of this opportunity to thank Jim Loving, Marilyn Nonte and Harry Ransdell personally. Not to be forgotten either are the janitors who put up with our messes and the night watchman who didn ' t lock us in the office on the many occassions we worked after hours. But, I think the biggest thanks goes to Our Leader and most worthy advisor, John H. Boyd, Jr., for his patience, confidence and understanding. Without Mr. Boyd to bolster our sagging spirits most of us would have given up long ago. No matter how big problems seemed to be, Mr. Boyd reduced them to their proper size in no time. There are many other persons too numerous to mention personally who are responsible in some way or another for this yearbook. To these people I would like to say, also thank you for a job well done. For myself, if each of you enjoys some part of this book enough to read it again sometime in the future, I am pleased and proud to have been a part of it. Sincerely PatUxJ 176 HIHEBICAN lEADBDQH 1 COMPANY i
