But how devious soever the maze We are treading, Whate'er the tale told of the past or the now, YVhatever of clouds or of ten1pestswe're dreading, Each to the same harbor is holding his prow. Dedicatory Ode. What do you ash of ine? Comrades in memory, This sad, sweet task of me? Solace and resource be I Write a poem! In this re-uniong Sure 'tis an ample theme, Come ye from far and near, Could I but voice the theme, Bringing your Charm and cheer Could I but woo the dream Voices and faces dear- Iutg 3 P09111 This is communion. Ye, who these places held Back in the year of eld, Join in my greeting- Classes remote and late, Help me congratulate This brave, young Ninety-eight Now with us meeting. For the old time and the new time hath each one its angel The one singing ever the old time refrain, While the other lis-ps on. a lute-tongued evangel, With a prophesy woven in the weft of the strain. While memory, the pensive broiwed maiden. throws kisses The old-time still has for us, holding us dear, Sweet hope glows all radiant with promise of blissels, Of joy without measure, and never a tear. Some, having their wills, won the trophies they fought for, Success on their pennons perched, long, long agog And others won, struggling, the treasures they sought for, And there be those who quaffed from the beaker of woe. And all, I doubt not, at one time have tasted The bitterest lees of grief and despairg' And some. peradventure, their talents have wasted, And faltered and fallen, sin seeming so fair. 12
