E11 has moved up to stzulent niunnger ofthe Ponf Room. 18 J--...-is Because over half of the U-IJ students receive some type of scholarship, grant, or loan, the office of Financial Aids is a potential statistical nightmare. Roger B. Sonneborn, new director of this department, estimated that over two million dollars would pass through his office for the 67-68 school year. This figure is an increase over last year's primarily because of the expanding state tuition grant program which provides financial aid to students attending private colleges. Although a large portion of the aid comes through the federal and state government, industry and private con- tributors, the program is definitely shifting toward self-help and long-term loans. This year over 60 students partici- pated in the work-study project which is directed by Leslie Kool. Under this plan, the university supplies jobs on campus for students, and the federal government pays a portion of the wages.

Brings Freshman Spirit By God! I'm a li-ID freshman! Huge red and white buttons dangled from hip pockets and jacket backs, belts and purses. No matter which way they were worn, the buttons announced the arrival of the new students to the I'-D campus. All freshmen were required to wear them for identifica- tion and admission to the orientation activities. But more- over, Orientation Chairman Mike Applegate stated that the buttons were designed to creat a unity among those who wear them . From the freshmen's first introduction to campus life, the Orientation theme of spirit and involvement was em- phasized. Group meetings, assemblies with deans, mixers, teas, a Western cookout complete with chuckwagons, steaks and entertainment, a watermelon contest and the Freshman Talent Show filled the hours of an exciting week of activ- ities. The climax was the first of the Pop Concert series featuring the Kingsmen and folksinger Chad Mitchell. 17
