Our students, we know, learn more in their four undergrad- uate years than students do attending most other colleges and universities. For example, our students rank among those from the top ten state-related universities in their grades on examina- tions for admission to graduate professional programs in law, medicine and dentistry. You, the Class of 1967, have the undergraduate education to enable you to compete successfully in further work and in life generally. Whether you do so or not is largely dependent upon you. That your achievements will be as considerable as your edu- cation opportunity has been, is our desire and our hope for each ?fgzm of you. 18 John A. Perkins, Ph.D,, L.L.ID. With an opening day 35-13 upset of Hofstra, the M.A.C. pre-season favorites, Delaware fans saw that great things might be ahead. After sneaking by Gettys- burg 3-0 on Jeff Lippincott's 43 yard second quar- ter field goal, defeating Lafayette, and routing Lehigh 41-0 on Homecoming, the Blue Hens en- tered the Temple game with a chance to win the Middle Atlantic Conference. A strong ground game and timely passing helped the Hens stop Temple 20-14 to bring the 1966 M.A.C. University Division title to Delaware. A final victory over Bucknell and losses to three major college foes gave the fighting Blue Hens a 6-3 season record. Those chosen were Russ Bonadonna, Stu Green, Jack Hoopes, Mike Purzycki, team cap- tain Ed Sand, Herb Slattery, and Harry Starrett. Herb Slattery was named to the Associated Press 1966 Little All-American Football team, voted Outstanding Player in the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division II, and finished in a three-way tie for Most Valuable Player in the M.A.C. Record-breaking performances were frequent among the 1966 Blue Hens. Delaware's leading pass receiver, Mike Purzycki, set three records, a one game total of 10 receptions, a season record of 42, and a career record of 98 catches. Brian Wright joined the Delaware 1000 Yard Club with vardage gained against Temple and ended the 1966 campaign in eighth place on the Delaware all- time rushing list. Senior Stu Green led the team in scoring with 10 TD's and finished his football ca- reer with 968 yards. Quarterback Frank Linzen- Jo Lippincoft. bold's 87 completed passes was a season record, while sophomore Bill Laughlin set a punting rec- ord with a 82 yard boot against Bucknell, 110 Stu Green. For the first time since 1963-64, the University of Delaware cagers finished the basketball season with a winning record, victorious in 15 contests, while losing only 8. An upset victory over Navy, a championship in the Pocono Classic, and a mid-season seven game win streak were only a part of the story of the 1966-67 Blue Hens. Coach Dan Peterson, a new- comer on the Delaware campus, found a winning combination throughout the season, as play was sparked by transfer talent and lettermen strength. Despite the loss of standouts Kenn Barnett and Mark Wagaman, a late season rebuilding program powered the Hens to victory in a bid for the M.A.C. playoffs. Fine performances by Charley Parnell, Vic Orth, Walt Cloud, and Bill Beatty helped to carry the Hens to their 15-9 record, With the loss of only two seniors from the 1966- 67 squad, including captain Bill Morley, and the addition of several outstanding freshman pros- pects, next wear's Blue Hen basketball team should be even better, Basketball Kenn Barnett, FRONT ROW: D. The high points of our social calendar for the past year included ATO weekend, the Christmas party and the Greek Party during IFC Week. The Help Week project at Camp Wright was a special time of fellowship among pledges and brothers, as were float- building and Playhbill in the fall. In the area of scholarship, ATO has been consistently among the leaders and ranked first among fraternities the past year. Character is that quality which makes a man a true individual; it may be demonstrated in many placesfrom the athletic field to the organization meeting. ATO stands near the top in intramural athletics, but more impor tantly it prides itself in displaying true sportsmanship. Campus leaders during the past year include the President of the Student Center Council, President of the Sophomore class and three other class officers, and the Vice-President of IFC. Last fall forty-one of our now sixty-five brothers maoved into our newly completed $110,000 addition. The house dedication which took place on December third was highlighted by a speech given by Supreme Court Justice and Fraternity President Tom Clark. Continuing to do things in a big way, Delta Tau Delta has achieved the second highest house cumulative index among the fraternities on campus for the second consecutive semester with a 2.74 last fall and a 2.56 last spring. We also placed fourth among fraternities in overall interfraternal athletic competition. Our play My Fair Fratman was voted a second place in the annual playbill competition during Greek Week last fall. In varsity athletics two Delts distinguished themselves in track and football, Brother Edwin Anderson, who is now attending the Fairleigh Dickinson School of Dentistry, was one of the all Middle Atlantic Conference choices for guard in 1965, and Brother Michael Carroll placed third in the 120-yard high hurdle event in the Middle Atlantic Conference track meet last spring. In the field of scholarship, two brothers, Robert Speigel and Alan Giberson, have distinguished themselves by being accepted to medical schools. Keeping in pace with our expanding house, Delta Upsilon chapter initi- ated twenty-one new brothers last spring and fourteen in the fall. 182 Linda Taylor, Sweetheart, 183 Kathleen Conley, Sweetheart. Kappa Alpha Beta Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order was founded g the University of Delaware in 1904, Since that time, the Broth- erhood has continued to promote the ideals of the Order in all possible ways, The activities of Beta Epsilon in the past yea have indicated a sustained interest in the attainment of these ideals. Brother . Patrick Kelly, as President of the Student Govers- ment Association, exemplifies KA's involvement in campis affairs, as well as the spirit of leadership maintained at Bela Epsilon. Athletic achievement by KA varsity athletes has bee ancther keynote of this year's activities. Outstanding in this ! respect is Brother Brian Wright, completing anather successful season as Delaware's leading rusher in foothall. The KA social program this year has been most rewarding culminating in the eagerly anticipated Old South Ball and Spring Weekend. This event, with its parade of rebels and secession from the Union, remains as Delaware's most colorful social event of the year. Keeping in mind that the ultimate goal of the University is education, Beta Epsilon has continued its cultural and educs tional programs with full vigor. Guest performers and speakens appearing at the house over the past year have included such personalities as Al Capp, famous creator of Li'l Abner. These elements, together with the spirit of true brotherhood have made this year one which will long be remembered by the Brothers of Kappa Alpha. 1684 E. Morley, . Dusewicz, T. We won the originality division and later 1st place in Campus Chest; have taken 2nd and 3rd place in IFC Playbill and this year won 1st place in the Fraternity Spirit Trophy. In intramurals, Lambda Chi has given a good showing all around. With all this we have consistently been above all fraternity scholastic index. The number of brothers in campus activities and varsity sports also shows our varied interests. Brother Hal Measley was a SCA senator at large and Erich Smith was head of the REVIEW News Staff, Brothers Bill Phillips and Sam Sloan have been in charge of the Greek Week Banguet the last two years. In sports, Brothers Phil Hitch, Joe Huggins, Ken Savage, Tom MacKnight, and Jim Roy have lettered in the following respectively: tennis, lacrosse, track, soccer, and swimming. Lambda Chi also has quite a few of its Brothers in honorary fraternities such as Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi. Our social calendar was highlighted as usual by our many house parties and the great Spring Weekend. So once again Lambda Chi finishes another year full of fond memories and proud accomplishments, Much credit is due to alumni and fac- ulty. And finally, many thanks to our housemother, Mrs. Ru- dolph, for all her service to the Brotherhood. Olivia Rispoli, Sweetheart. 186 Phyllis Buono, Sweetheart. Phi Kappa Tau The Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau, founded at Delaware in 1924, has reached a desir- able level of membership of fifty-five men. Lo- cated at 720 Academy Street, the chapter house has been a source of pride for the forty brothers who occupied it during the past year, Expansion of facilities is expected to begin in the near fu- ture, The scope of Phi Kappa Tau's involvement in campus activities has widened significantly this year, Prominent among the achievements are the fraternity's fourth place in fraternity intramurals and the championship softball and table tennis teams. A united effort in the fall produced second place in the Homecoming Float Competition. In addition, leaders emerged such as Matt Crary, President of the Intramural Council; Tim Surratt, President of the Wesley Foundation; Bob Vinyard, Homecoming Chairman; and Roy Brader, member of Eta Kappa Nu, honorary electrical engineering society. 188 L R. From their home at 151 West Main Street, the brothers of Theta Chi infiltrate into every facet of University activity. As is true with any function connected with a university, Theta Chi fosters a spirit which is thoroughly conducive to academic achievement. An extensive scholarship program is followed by gach brother to insure graduation, the primary goal of any fraternity man. Socially, the fraternity schedules a full calendar of house parties, open houses, and smokers throughout each semester. Anticipation of such events as the Caveman Party and the annual Bowery Ball extends far beyond the brotherhood of Theta Chi. Thus, the men of Theta Chi contrib- ute significantly to the social life of the entire Campus. In the realm of athletics, Theta Chi is always an outstanding participant. Each season Varsity Sports enjoy the services of many of the brothers, but athletic participation does not end here. The fraternity also engages in every sport the Univer- sity offers at the intramural level. In this way Theta Chi instills in each of its members a deep sense of proud defeat and humble victory. During the fol- lowing 60 years, the population doubled again, result- ing in a world population of 3.0 hillion by 1960. It is expected to double again by the vear 2000. During the early to middle part of the nineteen eighties, it is anti- cipated a world food crisis could develop. A new course, entitled 'Food and Population, has been intro- duced in the College of Agricultural Sciences. This is a general educalion course which will be of interest to students throughout the University. The course will aid the students in understanding and appraising the rela- tionship of food and population on a world basis. Technology in agricultural production, processing and marketing has been changing rapidly. As a result, the type of employment into which graduates of the College of Agricultural Sciences enter has changed over the past fifteen years. Due to the increased invest- ment required to enter agricultural production, only about 5 percent of the graduates enter farming. Ap- proximately 40 percent of the undergraduates pursue advanced degrees. A major portion of the remainder of the graduates accept positions with firms closely allied to agricultural production, processing andor market- ing. An increasing number of our students come from a non-farm background. Because of these and other changes, the staff of the College of Agricultural Sci- ences has made an intensive study of the needs of our students. As a result, during the past four years courses dropped, added or changed have affected 88 percent of the courses offered by the College. The ad- justments, in general, have emphasized basic funda- mentals and scientific principles and de-emphasized the how to do it aspects. 204 Gerald B. Abrams pj Gary R, Adams Henry Alexander, Jr, G. Wills Philip A. Wolhar Victoria L. Zacheis 241 College of Education Dean Roy Hall New Education Building 242 People of all nationalities, cultures and walks of life perceive at last the relationship between edu- cation and their ability to participate wisely in their own development. Indeed, the hope of free- dom, peace, higher standards and the very con- duct of life seem to hinge on the amount and qual- ity of education secured by each individual. As a consequence, the provision of education is a mo- mentous task. First, in terms of sheer numbers alone, this task seems staggering. Not only is the population in- creasing at all age levels but the proportion of the populace desiring an education is also increasing. Second, many factors and trends are influencing education toward more variety and higher quality. Occupational specialization, population mobility, the international situation, automation of lower skill jobs, technology in general and the changing socio-economic desires of peopleall these fac- tors are demanding of citizens a higher order of skills and thought processes. The recognition of the need for both quantity and quality of education may well prove the say- ior, not only of universal education as an ideal but also of free society itself. That standards in education are inversely related to the number of citizens obtaining an education is a strange para- dox in a democracy. Nevertheless, this fallacious notion was gaining acceptance prior to the rebirth of interest in education. Even among educators there were strong voices who would define eduga- tional standards in terms of increasing the propo- tion of our population from whom educational opportunities are withheld, The more complex life becomes, the more es sential to freedom it is for all citizens to be edu- cated. Planning, implementing, and supporting such an undertaking is not an activity for guess work. Rather, it must involve and grow from'a theoretical orientation. Meeting this kind of challenge calls for the total resources of the universities of this land. Helping the University of Delaware find ways and means to meet its obligation to the great cause is a major function of the College of Education, one of the several professional colleges within the Univer sity. f. ! i J N Margaret M. Commings College of Engineering Engineering is the best liberal-applied science education offered today. Technology is advancing at such a high rate that individuals who expect ta play a significant role in our society must have an ever greater understanding of its relation to all phases of human endeavor. The design and pro- duction of goods is not the engineer's sole role. He is responsible for finding better ways for people to live togethersolving problems of water and air pollution, transportation, communication, housing, clothing, and numerous others. Carees planned to help solve the world's social and poli- tical problems too often result in just more talk about these problems when the engineer's under- standing of technology and his capacity for action are missing. Students prepare for careers of lead- ership in industry, university, community and government service. The importance of general culture for the engi- neer is recognized. He must be interested in the current problems of civilized nations and com- munities if he is to be effective in practicing his profession. He must be able to use mathematical, graphical, written, printed and wverbal means of communication effectively to convey his ideas and understand the ideas of others. The College of Engineering provides unsur- passed laboratory facilities, the opportunity ta study under people who are themselves actively engaged in research and professional activities and the benefits of a location where significant technological progress is being made in industry and in the university, The guidance of industrial leaders is freely given. With the rapid expansion of scientific developments and knowledge, the well-educated home economist has a unigue oppor- tunity in an increasingly larger number of professional CATEETs. The curriculum provides an education that is con- cerned with the psychological, sociological asthetic and economic forces affecting the family., Home economics students study the natural and biological sciences, the social sciences, art and the humanities. Career opportunities in Child Development, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics Education and Textiles and Clothing are concerned with improving the goods and services available to families, promoting research which reflects in the strengthening of family life and furthering community, national and world conditions. These home economics professions are found in busi- ness and industry, in education and in research. Dean Irma Ayers Z66 Margaret A. Allen Ellen J. Bittle Oga E. Blackburn ' i Mary K. It functions within the philosophy of the University of Delaware which states that students are expected to grow in knowledge to the fullest extent of their capacity. Graduates emerge as ladies and gentlemen of demonstrably greater culture than when they en- tered and develop a greater-than-usual sense of responsibility for public good. Requirements for the Bachelor of Science de- gree in Nursing provide such learning experiences as will assist students in functioning at the high- est level of their potential, establish a sound hase for graduate education in nursing, and prepare students for professional nursing positions in hos- pitals, schools, industry and other community health centers. The faculty of the College of Nursing embraces the philosophy that learning occurs best when the educational program prepares the student to meet the problems of today and the changes of tomor- row, and that the role of the professional nurse incorporates a wide spectrum of competencies in- cluding the promotion of health, the prevention of illness, the treatment of illness and rehabilitation. In each instance, the professional nurse functions with competence and compassion in meeting the needs of patients and the community, Memorial Hall Hullihen Hall Suzanne H, Bartucca MMarianne Brunt 274 - b Susan . Wood Associate Degree Programs The Associate Degree programs of study are planned to meet the needs of Delaware residents who desire to continue their studies beyvond the high school level yet who do not intend to complete a four year degree program, The Associate in Applied Science Degree is given in the areas of agriculture, chemical technology, and secretarial studies. In addition to the baccalaureate degree, the College of Agri- cultural Sciences offers four two year terminal degree pro- grams. All stress the scientific background necessary for em- ployment with firms servicing agricultural producers, as well as with those concerned with the production or distribution of agricultural products. Among the many chemical technicians in short supply in the Wilmington area are those occupying positions as laboratory supervisors, Approximately one oul of five technicians em- ployed in this area is a chemical technician, and the two year program in chemical technology adequately prepares graduates to qualify for positions in these and other fields. The two year program in Secretarial Studies has recently been expanded and revised to give future secretaries an oppor- tunity to become proficient in all phases of stenographic and secretarial activity, and therefore capahle of fulfilling exacting secretarial positions, ;-'aalt' Christine W.
