most serious threat to highereducation in Colo- frado in the last fifty years, the student body pro- aceeded to attack the aggressor with a vehe- Tmence and determination Quite atypical of the - lethargic norm. Everyone was involved with The ,g'Zause. Boulder Junior College T-Shirts sar- jdonically and fashionabty advertised the situa- ation, and large banners proclaiming the some were ptaced at strategic highway locations. If nothing else, the JBC's threat proved that CU stu- L nts, even in 1979, acankget involved and do at leaster white; tanned and 4 was wett said ;' CSU President Dan Captis, was the great- estedehonstration of student, faculty. and staff unity tn the past 25 years. The dedication was certainly impressive, yet strangely enough, the campus' attention span seemed to ctimax and fizzte out immediately after the ralty. By the next day, the student mood was attuned to other con- cerns. The T-Shirts put away, and spring vacations being planned, enthusiasm and interest in such obscure entities as Joint Budget Committees seemed to have vanished, and one had to read th L aper to keep up with the-Situation. Politics and voting consumed on inordinate amount of student attention this year, and the ballot box seemed a permanent fixture in the UMC tbetowt. On March 14, 7600 student heads massed in the UMC Fountain Area topposite page, centen to strongly indicate their opposition to the proposed Cuts. Never fear, however. Those 24,000 merry- makers enrolled at CU don't exist entirely on a diet of fun and games. At least, in the eyes of state potitioions, the CU student body's vote is quite desirable and worthy of serious seduction. November's state elections influenced the stu- dents more then in recent years, with almost all of the candidates visiting the campus, repeatedly. The issues thistyeor were trendy, yet necessary. Solar energy, outo emission controls, the Equal Rights Amendment, wilderness preservation and more attracted the students to become involved in the election process. But a smaller number than usual voted in the 23 student-domtnoted me some Danlet cincts, most noticeably helping to sweep incum- bent Tim Wirth to on easy victory over conser- vative Ed Scott. The only candidate who didn't visit CU, Democrat Lloyd Hoskeit. lost to feisty com- poigner Bill Armstrong. And yet, the majority of CU students didn't appear to be very concerned with state potitics. Later on in the school year, in March to be exact, many students suddenly decided that they had better become concerned-fost. Catching most everyone unaware, the Joint Budget Committee of the Colorado General Assembly had advised the state Iegistoture to eliminate 432 CU faculty positions, or in other 1 words-H percent of the CU faculty.
