S J: tR!ng The Spring of ' 43 was the last of the Mohicans . . . then came the greatest invasion since the Huns. On June 30th, 1943, the University of Colorado went nautical. The Navy moved in with everything but the ocean, and the civilian population slunk around ' yes, sirring ' every- one from the Captain to the bus boys in Wayne ' s. The school teachers and playboys moved to Boulder from the four corners for C. U. ' s notorious summer school and found concentrated larnin ' the order of the day. Life went frustratingly vice versa, women moved into the fraternity houses and the men moved six deep into the single rooms of the Women ' s Dorm. Sailors were squeezed into every nook and cranny in Boulder. Instead of swimming, the campus cuties displayed their nether limbs in the pattern of irrigation ditches on the Quadrangle. Boulder ' s one hot spot, the nautical hangout, the Anchorage, raised the temperature a degree or two when the Chi Psis moved next door and installed l-i r 2-aL!Sg ,?,w5|. at U jcVl Normal life is difficult to achieve under the tran- sient conditions of constant turnover of faculty, stu- dents, and personnel in general. The Navy invasion of such great magnitude, the constant leaving of students for the service, the furlough visits of old students — make it very hard to stick to the job at hand. To our mind the college student of today who realizes the worth of a mind that is trained, and who sticks to grasping the tools of learning as long as possible is aiding the future pros- pects of the war eifort. Nevertheless, however serious, the scholastic tone, the C. U. student has managed to maintain his ' joie de vivre ' . In spite of bond drives. Red Cross classes, and library grinding interspersed between them, he finds time for his gun. 15 CLCoUsqsL at {ji)ah. a pipe in the basement beneath which the boys took turns lying to inhale the tabu amber brew . . . the library rocked on its foundations when viewing the never before believable fact of more than library personnel in it on summer afternoons . . . rushing went on and increased in intensity until sorority women went around with knives attached to their dirndls . . . and freshmen women found it hard to attend college with as many as ten coking dates a day . . . the Theta and the Pi Phi Seniors decided to make their sneaks a tradition instead of an occasion and the Anchorage and Bill got to know them well . . . Hitchhikers saw the dawn of a new day . . . Eldorado Springs saw an increase in business while the Dark Horse remained one . . . President Stearns joined the Army and went overseas and Dr. Gus admirably took over . . . the Waves were brought in by the tide and were eyed with speculation concerning women ' s ability with oriental languages . . . the letting of blood was instituted by the Blood Bank and man ' s fortitude proved less than that of the weaker sex.
