They have had an ambition not only to build the best yearbook yet produced on these quadrangles, but also to lay a foundation for the getting-out of still better books in the years to come,-books which shall be enthusiastically representative of the spirit of the University of Chicago. This two-fold task has been complicated by the usual obstacle of a circulation only two-fifths the size of that main- tained by the average college annual, plus a national situation making for the Worst possible advertising conditions. Many improvements intended for the book have consequently had to be laid asideg many of our plans have been hamperedg and many of our hopes have been destroyed. We offer you here the Cap and Gown 1921. We have done the best that is in us, hoping that you will appreciate our efforts and understand our mistakes. Our Work is not yet overg we are going to put our experience and our unfulfilled plans at the disposal of next yearis staff. And We sincerely hope you will join us in whole-heartedly backing them, so that by united effort we may assure to the University the annual tribute of a perfect yearbook. He has performed a difficult, intricate, and uninteresting job with cheerfulness and perseverance. His loyalty to the book has been unsurpassed, and he may well be termed a second editor-in-chief. Russell Ward has been a conscientious and faithful worker on the staff for two years. His dependableness and efliciency, together with his fund of suggestions for the improvement of the book, have been invaluable. Benjamin March, beside being a competent photographer, is the composer of most of the snapshot and photograph layouts. His tireless and clever work, and his devotion to the book, cannot be too highly -commended. Helen Palmer, whose Review of the Year and whose verse appear on succeeding pages, came to our assistance in time of need. In spite of great pressure of outside work, she gave us her copy, whose value to the book speaks for itself, within a surprisingly short time. The staff is deeply grateful to her, and has elected her to its lnembership. Jackson Moore and Robert Seymour have both rendered very capable and valuable assistance. The staff would have been hard put to it without them. Among the freshmen,J,,athan Crandall, Frank Reis, and Henry Spruth deserve particular recognition for their willing performance of considerablf typewriter drudgery. The ready and close co-operation, willingness to work, and friendship for each other on the part of all the members of the staff have this year been notable. People who gladly spend Saturdays and holidays in the office, going without lunch in order to get more done, are people with whom it is a pleasure to work.
