The Springs was linked to Warrensburg by a miniature called The Dummy, which made at least eight trips a day to and from the city. By 1912, nine lakes had been developed. Some were reserved for bathing, while others were part of a reservoir for the city water supply, and the rest were used for fishing and boating. Several ornate buildings dominated the Springs. These included a huge convention hall called the Tabernacle, the Hall of Philosphy, and numberous summer cottages belonging to people as tar away as St. Louis. Unfortunately, religious groups began to question the morality of theatrical performances at the Springs and the Chautauquas began traveling campaigns. Each year after that 1 i sawa decline in popularity and a pocket loss for Colonel Chtistdljher. As Christopher grew older and s. . 1 radio and automobiles became popular, Pertle Springs' former attendants began to go to newly 1 created recreation facilities in 1 Warrensburg,,the Central Missouri? . U' State Teachers' College, and .touri- ing throughout the Midwest. ln actuality, the resort had not been active for several years. The Dummy?' line was discontinued in 1922. Possibilities of conven- tions ended when Minnewawa was gutted by fire in 1926. Completely destroyed, there was no need to rebuild it. -Steve Lipira
