11555 Marching Mules play at Arrowhead's ,Band Day The I973 CMSU Marching Mules, under the direction of Dr. Russell Coleman, high stepped their way into the lives of many football fans here and across the nation. Returning for the sixth time as guests of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Marching Mules served as host band for Arrowhead Stadium's first Band Day. There they were joined by trumpet soloist Bill Chase, who is best known for his recording of c'Get lt On . This performance was the eighth professional football game that the Marching Mules have appeared on National television, six for the Kansas City Chiefs and twice for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Marching Mules also appeared on national television at the NCAA Pecan Bowl in Arlington, Texas. i In spite of adverse weather and long hours of practice and drills, the CMSU band displayed their marching and musical techniques at all home football games and at Joplin, Missouri, where they performed at the Missouri Southern College vs CMSU football game. Leading the 1973 Homecoming Parade of over 3,000 musicians and an array of floats, the Marching Mules headed by Drum Major Mark McFarland and twirlers Marilyn Nissen, Janet Carson, and Cheryl Tisell, kicked off the 1973 Homecoming festivities. Later in the after- noon the band shared the half time agenda with the Southwest Missouri State marching band from Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Coleman, in his tenth year as director of the Marching Mules is aid- ed by assistant directors Robert Gifford and Richard Gibson, and Dr. Russ Coleman, Director. graduate assistant Gary Love. 10 Mark McFarland, Drum Major.
