Lovinger, President Central Missouri State University CMS claims university status On April 21, 1972, Warren Hearnes, the governor of Missouri, signed into law a bill enabling five state colleges to change their names to university. lmmediately following the signing of the bill, the Board of Regents of Central Nlissouri State College voted to change the name ofthe college to Central Missouri State Universi- ty. This change from college to university will be of value to students graduating from other universities and colleges within Missouri and in neighboring states. The Board of Regents, a bipartisan board, governs the policies of Central Missouri State University. Of its six members, three are from each of the two ma- jor political parties in the state. Each is appointed by the Governor of Missouri and is confirmed by the state Senate. The appointed members serve six-year terms and are eligible for reappointment. The Board appoints the President of the University who serves as the chief executive officer. The Commissioner of Educa- tion is the exofficio member. The members of the Board of Regents this year were Byron Constance, Leland Culp, J. M. Cunningham, Mrs. Sinclair Gottlieb, Joe Herndon, W. E. Simpson, and President Warren C. Lovinger.
