Mary Welch wllriumph of Honor , originally titled all Trion- fo Del' Ono1'e was first performed November 26, 1718 at the Teatro di Fiorentini, Naples. Scarlattiis work, his only comic opera, is signi- ficant as being the earliest example of a full- length opera buffa in literary Italian. Being a true opera buffa, the opera originally was sung throughout. For this performance, to allow the action to move faster and thus shorten the play- ing-time, most of the original recitative parts were spoken rather than sung. The plot of the opera takes the form of a series of love triangles with each male character falling in and out of love with other character's wives and girl friends. ln the end, the characters are married to their original partners and live happily ever after. Erminio vows to avenge his sister's lost honor.
