Q...-A s ' at 1 C The old dummy train leaving Pertle Springs area. .qv 1 tg. duh 'ix 1' 1:- into modern recreational area Pertle Springs, a once famous resort, is situated in the area surrounding a spring located one mile south of Warrensburg. Previous to CMS, James H. Christopher acquired the land for 359500. He divided this land into lots, calling them '4Purtle Springsf, and developed it as a place of resort. The spelling was later changed to 4'Pertle Springs. Dams were erected throughout the hills to form lakes, the largest being Lake Cena. The Minnewawa House, a large hotel for three hundred guests was built in 1887 followed by an assembly hall, capable of seating over three thousand people. Because of its central geographic position, pleasant reputation, meeting facilities, and spring water, Pertle Springs was nationally known and used for conventions and camp meetings held by famous individuals and groups. A meeting of all the Dunkards, who supposedly could drink only the purest water was once a great attraction. It was for such a meeting that a Hdummyw railway line was laid soon after 1889. This steam powered train consisted of three cars, with each car capable of holding a maximum of 70 people. It was estimated that the 'tdummyi' train made from 8 to 20 round trips daily from Hotel Estes on Holden Street in Vifarrensburg to Pertle Springs. The train was specially silenced so that it would not disturb the townspeople. Around 1805, a Great Silver Convention was held at Pertle Springs with Richard 4'Silver Dicki' Bland, a Free Silver proponent, and his main opposer William Jennings Bryan as the leading speakers. Because of travel and communication changes, Pertle Springs lost its prominence. lt practically lay idle for a few years, until it was purchased in 1959 by Central Missouri State College. Lake Cena was cleaned and deepened and a dam was rebuilt. During the summer of 1970 new golf course greens and tees with com- plete watering systems were begun and it is expected that 9 holes will be completed by the summer of 1971.
