Greek Sex-Comedy LYSISTRATA plays to enthused audiences by Aristophanes Director - Dr. James L. Highlander Technical Director - Michael S. Corriston The battle of the sexes has long been the favorite subject of the comic playwright. The historical first treatment of the subject was c'Lysistrata, by Aristophanes. This play has been a continual favorite, being excerpted and pla- giarized by the worldis playwrights down through the years, It has been popularly anthologized in the twentieth century and many students have been introduced to the play in that form. Productions, professional and amateur, are increasingly plentiful and the theme of the play, the search for an effective protest to war, is contemporily applicable. The modernized version presented in Hen- dricks Hall retains much of the content of the orginal ver- sion and needs no footnotes to explain the meaning to the audience. The old women cackle over their temporary victory over the men. 14
