OVINGER PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As the Old Elm represents stability, tradition, and growth in the physical world, so Central Missouri State College represents similar char- acteristics in the academic world. Established in l87l, this great College rapidly grew from small beginnings to a place of leadership among the outstanding institutions of higher education in the Nation. Since its establishment, it has represented the best in academic achievement and scholastic standards. Throughout the years, many fine traditions have developed. I From the halls of Central Missouri State Col- lege have come many leaders in our demo- cratic society. From these same halls will come many ofthe future leaders. lt is not by chance that this has happened in the past and will happen in the future. lt is because of the ex- cellence of the faculty, the student body, and the program in general which have been main- tained through these many years. When the chapter of history on higher educa- tion is written for the twentieth century, Cen- tral Missouri State College is sure to be men- tioned often and favorably. The Old Elm through its stability and growth exemplifies the traditions and accomplishments which make this College the great institution which it is. Fosmz DEDICATION For 43 years Earl R. Foster, professor of chem- istry, has tqken a deep, profound interest not only in the development of student intelligence but also in the growth of the college. He has been on the campus to witness the transition of CMS from a Normal school to the largest state college in iMissouri. During these years he has seen many of his former students achieve distinction in their chosen fields. All who have attended his classes remember his subtle wit and keen sense of humor, his pa- tience and his understanding for through the years he has been a student of human nature. He has always been an admirer of the out-of- doors and this interest is reflected in his early participation in sports and later in his interest in athletics. For many years he has served on the faculty athletic committee and presently is vice president of MIAA. A graduate of the Warrensburg Normal and a lifetime resident of Warrensburg, Professor Foster also has taken time for an active interest in civic af- fairs. Central Missouri State affectionately dedicates this book to a man who has dedi- cated his life to assisting the student and who has given generously of his loyalty to his alma mater. r ' W, f at if .
