In the absence of Dean Paul A. Jones, William b. Hayes, Ed.D., took over the office and the headaches of the Dean of Men and handled the position extremely well. Russell Buchanan, Ph.D., possibly the most popular history professor on campus, was oppointed to the posi- tion of Acting Dean of Liberal Arts at UCSB in 1948. 19
