In members, E the class of ,Z-l is probably the smallest in the college, 5 but this has not been an obstacle to enthusiasm and ac- E tivity. With members drawn from all departments, the E juniors find many and varied interests within the scope 2 of their organization. E As a class, 'Z-li has endeavored to perpetuate the inter- E ests of its members in civic, athletic and social lines. The Q class had both a spiritual and material share in the 5 Student Friendship Fund, launched in the interest of E Rmb mf 'Chf 'd fViCe'P eS'l Southern European college students. They also shared E in establishing the memorial to Miss Irene Struthers. Q '2-Vs honor in athletics has been upheld by Francis E Noel and Henry Poetker, who have played on various E class and varsity teams during the year. Noel also was 5 Editor-in-chief of the 1923 issue of La Cumbre. 2 Social contacts have been well cared for by the class 5 gatherings and functions. HIS CLASS UF '23 has the honor of being the first to go from Santa Barbara State Col- ' 7 lege as a baccalaureate degree-granting in- stitution. lileven of the graduates of this year ' will share in this great privilege bestowed upon the col- lege, the remainder receiving secondary certificates in Home Economics, Community lllechanics, llflusic and Art. ' This has been the second honor bestowed upon the institution within a short time, the first being the grant- - ing of the status of State College last year. Therefore, this class should feel doubly proudg first, for having sat- isfactorily completed two or more years of wo1'k at an institution of such high standingg and secondly, of being the first rc receive degrees from the Santa Barbara State College. N The members of this class have taken a prominent part in the activities of the college, and have devoted 1 ! themselves unfalteringly to its welfare. Fred Nlarcellus, . Q 3 Uunej '23, has served well and ably as President of the Student Body, helping to bring this organizafion to Ralph Dellol! CPrcqj Ruth Antler-son fsce.'i'iQas,y its present high standing. Howard Ahlf, as treasurer has also given his untiring efforts in its behalf. Robert Alimstmlllly fAug.J '23, recently elected publicity manager, also acted as manager of the Student Council, and is well known and liked by all as proprietor of the Stu- depts' Co-op Store. Jack Lenfest, graduating in February, served well as Pub- llclfb' Manager before him and was also a hard-fighting player on the football and basketball teams. The Senior class was also represented on the football field by Howard Ahlf, who played a very good game and was one of the main supports of the line. The Home Economics organization had as its president, Ruth Anderson, Who will receive her degree in August, Dorothy Gurley, as Secretary, and Florence Rathbun, as Treasurer, both of whom graduate in June with degrees. 3 The Senior Class organized early in the school year, electing Ralph DeBolt as lresident, and Ruth Anderson as Secretary-Treasurer, and with Mr. W. W. Peters IIS Faculty Sponsor. Several business meetings were held during the year, and the Urilfllnization took an active part in the send-off rally for the football team when lcilvmll for the game at Bakersfield. ln the Student Friendship Drive, the seniors contributed without exception, giving more per capita than any other class. , AS the first class to finish a four-year course attthis institution as a full-Hedged Cflllvge, the class of '23 has established a precedent by petitioning the faculty to honor seniors by granting those with proper standing the privilege of graduating without examinations, as is traditional with other Colleges. mm gill! The officers of the Sophomore Class are Harold Sian- ford, presidentg Cecile Booth, vice-presidentg Marjorie LOW, secretary-treasurer, Mr. Hamilton Wolf, head of the art department, is faculty sponsor. Despite their smallness in numbers, the sophomores have Played an important part in school activities. The Class basketball squad took second place in the inter-class series. The members of the team were LeRoy Rundell, Henfb' Minetti, forwards, Harold Sanford, centerg Mer- ton Harlow and Lewis Goodrich, guards. Sanford was later chosen captain of the varsity quintette. .llldging from the applause, the sophomore skit present- ed as a farewell to the gridiron squad before their trip to Bakersfield, was one of the most popular presented. The cast for the skit was Miss Victory, Dorothy Halesg Santa Barbara, Evans Porter, Bakersfield, LeRoy Run- delli LaVerne, Henry Minettig the cameraman, Everett Gamage. The class has also furnished its share of student-body Officers. Dorothy Hales of the sophomore class, is sec- retary, and Merton Harlow is yell leader. LeRoy Run- dell is business manager of La Cumbre, and president of the Outing Club. Everett Gamage is president of the Literary Forum.
