K Chairman of the Division of Life Sciences Although students in the Division ot Life Sciences can't isolate the origin of lite, they did learn the answers to basic questions con- cerning the functions of living organisms and plants. Biology, as well as Comparative Anatomy, Botany, Bacteriology, Zoology, and Physi- ology, were offered to students majoring in pre-med and other related biological fields. l Physical Sciences :-f ln the Physical Sciences practical application of classroom theories was attained through laboratory work and field trips. Freshmen struggled through Physics, Chemistry, and Math courses, they asked the question How? Their upper division lab assistants had gone ahead to ask the question, Why? in relation to more advanced fields of knowledge. ln their attempt to answer these ques- tions faculty and students together conducted research projects. - UCR's Physical Sciences Department has shown outstanding work in this the technical age of satellites, rockets, and atomic power. Physical Education To the Physical Education Department were raised such questions as, Should we have a football team? and Should physical education be a required course? Althoughfthe first question is unanswerable at the present, the second draws immediate replies from the staff. One look at the variety of courses offered the students shows why the physical educa- tion courses are important as well as enjoyable to an indi- vidual. Courses offered range from social dance to judo, and includeitennis, life-saving, bowling, and modern dance. The department also offers an inter-collegiate and intra-mural sports program. Education is seeking and questioning. ln Social Sciences, man in particular is questioned-his unique thinking pro- cesses, his social' attitudes, and his influence on the world about him. These and other anthropomorphic topics are con- sidered in such classes as Psychology, Geography, Ethics, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, and Education. John S.
