Ralph Waldo Emerson once remarked: Our chief want in life is some- body who shall make us do what we can. I should like to take these words as the theme of my message for the l959 Tartang for it seems to me that no more important service could be done for today's college and university students than to make them live up to the limit of the talents and opportunities that are theirs. Perhaps never before have the opportunities for individuals of talent and training been so nearly limitless. You who are students today will live to see a fantastically changed world, and you may have some part in creating that world, if, to paraphrase Emerson, you find a motivating force that will make you do what you can, rather than merely what you cannot escape. The appearance of each year's TARTAN is, inevitably, a time of mingled sadness and gladness: sadness, because we say goodbye to another graduating class, to familiar faces, gladness, because in these pages are captured forever some of the unique experiences of days which, while leading to the fulfillment of careers, will always have their own strong claim to our affections. Not the least of the pleasures and satisfactions which these pages will invoke for you in future years, will be the knowledge that while you were a member of this academic community you were richly absorbing not only the pleasures, plus the trials and tribulations of undergraduate life, but also the intellectual and spiritual awareness we have striven for so unceasingly here at UCR. Thus your TARTAN will be for you a two-fold joy-the fond remembrance of the past and a reminder of the life of the mind and spirit which enlightened your undergraduate days. ' Herman T. Spieth Chancellor Herman T. Spleth o o Administrator'
