Betterecl last Bob Woertink prepares to ward off an on-rushing tackler. UCR's fleet fullback probably hurt his thumb in a similar fashion. Playing a schedule of seven games, highlighted by UCR's first participa- tion in the All-Cal Weekend at Berke- ley, the Clan's light, fast, and inexperi- enced 35-man squad enjoyed its most successful season under head mentor Carl Selin. The new season brought with it a new line coach, Gil Allan, and seven- teen freshmen. Along with them came a new spirit, a competitive spirit and desire to win which helped the Clan upset a highly regarded Cal Western team, and which reached its highest peak in the last 30 minutes of the final game against Long Beach State Frosh. Twinkle Toes Bob Woertmk dances off-tackle and much needed Clan yard- age.

P' , Ken Robinson prepares to gallop away i from a defensive man, as tired Don , Spigner watches from his reclined - position. V A .Qty r 1' season's 1 This new spirit was typified by the playing of honorary captain John Wallace and most valuable player Don Spigner. Clan fans will remember the hard tackling of Spigner, Rom- mel, Wallace and Blakelyg the hard blocking of Mike Dalton and Dan Cartyj the running of twinkle-toed Bob Woertink and the im- proved play of Bob Thomas. They also can recall the inspirational play of Big Bill Rommel and the 75-yard pass-run play from Ken Rob- inson to Ed Blakely in the Cal Tech games Can we forget when center Sid Walker put the ball into orbit against Claremont at Homecoming? Twenty players received letter awards dur- ing the course of the season. Omar Pertel, Dan Carty, and Ken Robinson were second year letter winners, while Chuck Mitchell and John Wallace earned their third year blanket awards. 4 Unmentioned thus far has been the work Of Andy Major and Larry Thompson. Coach Selin called Larry the best equipment manager his ever hadg and Andy must have used eight miles of tape keeping the team tit to play. ' V wa l record
