....An Interesting ugar Beet ff me ister J. E. STEWART 8: SON LOST THEIR FIRST PLANT- ING . . . THINNING ON THE SECOND WASN'T STARTED UNTIL JULY 7TH. YET THEY ENDED UP WITH I7 TONS AVERAGE PER ACRE. by!! Mr. S'fewari's report- gives Shell NH3 credit: Due to moisture conditions, we lost our original planting, and by the time our replants had started it was so late in the growing season that even old and experienced beet men felt sure we were doomed to failure. However, as Shell Nl-I3 was the best and really the only plant food that could be applied, and as it was the 'ith of July before thinning was started, we went ahead applying the required amount to comply with the government specifi- cations. Right from the start the sugar beets made rapid and remarkable growth. Daily we felt. more encouraged, and the final result was a definitely satisfactory beet crop considering conditions. The Shell NH3 gave us an average of 17 tons with an average sugar of 20.211, For a time our sugar was running as high as 25721, but unfavorable weather during the last part of the harvest caused this to fall. However, we were still very pleased with the final results. The method of application was a great help in saving both time and labor. From the cost standpoint, we feel that even if we could have used a dry fertilizer, the Shell NH3 was no more expensive, considering application, than any other we might have used. There is no chance of mechanical damage in the application of Shell NH3, which certainly appeals to us. g'We plan to use Shell NI-I3 on our entire planting in 1939. CSignedJ J. E. STEWART As with sugar beets, so with wheat, flax, prunes and many other Western crops, Shall Nl-I3 is earning the growers new profits. Shell NH3 is metered into the irrigation water-where the water goes the nitrogen goes . . . right to the feeder roots. Nitrogen content is over 8071. No residue is left in the soil. 1. 'it J. E. Stewart is well known in sugar beef growing district around Brentwood, California. He farms 3II acres in beets. SHELL NH3 SERVICE SAVES GROWERS MONEY NH3 is applied for you by trained nitrogen experts. NH3 is delivered as neerled. No capital tie-up. NH3 is continually tested on California crops. NH3 is uniformly applied-at the right time-in exactely the right amounts. NO LABOR! NO MONEY TIED UP! NO GUESSWORK! NO WASTE! FREE Booldel' for Davis Students Ni'rrogaI'ion on Irrigated Farms The complete story of Shell NH3-how it is applied and how it works, dozens of actual case histories with citrus, wheat, flax, prunes, grapes, tomatoes, almonds, apri- cots and other Western crops.
