Not only is the Pauley Ballroom used for dances, meetings, and conventions, but also for studying during finals. Tables are set up and coffee is served by the ASUC. Pedro Legend Around the campus during each season of final examinations, any evening, particularly when are hard at study and begin to get tired and sleepy, you may hear a weird call in the distance saying Peeedrooh. Usually the- first cry comes from a single throat and floats through the joined by other voices to become a mournful wail. There are many explanations of this weird tradition. One is that a lady living on Piedmont Avenue had a dog named Pedro who was to return home in the evening. The lady would call for her wandering animal and the chivalrous fraternity men would call too. Another story goes that one fraternity on campus had an interesting combination of members: one, a huge football player and the other a small mischievous lad. The smaller was always getting into trouble and calling for his stronger friend, whose name was Pedro. The third story is that Pedro, the card game, was once very popular among students and in past years students could be heard calling just as students now are incessantly calling, Fourth for bridge? The Berkeley campus used to be part of a Spanish rancho and the next story goes that the beautiful senorita of the house fell in love with an Indian named Pedro. They planned to elope but her cruel father had her lover murdered. Ever since, she has wandered through the Berkeley hills his name. Try and find a place to sit in the Library Reference room at 1:10 on a Sunday afternoon during finals. The last, and probably the most popular of the legends, provides one last, thin ray of hope during finals. Pedro, a dog belonging to one of the earlier presidents of the University, was lost one night in the Berkeley hills. After a fruitless search, the president gave up the hunt and promised that there would be no more finals if anyone could find the dog. So every semester the cry of Pedro resounds across campus as optimistic students wait for the dog to come home.

Ludwig ' s Fountain One of the new landmarks on campus that came with the of the new Student Union is a fountain . . . this fountain is not named after a Regent or a professor but after Ludwig von Schwarenberg, a Chesapeake Bay retriever who adopted the fountain as soon as the first water was put in and hasn ' t left since ... except for a short period this spring when ' he was to the home of his owners after spreading green paint through the halls of the new Educational and Psychology Building. As students pass by the fountain on the way to class or to the Bear ' s Lair for coffee, Ludwig entertains them by chasing sticks and splashing through the waters of his fountain.
