President Kerr Charter Day 1962 was a day of great excitement and celebration not only for the University, but also for the entire Bay Area. It heralded the inauguration of Strong as Third Chancellor of the Berkeley campus and the appearance of President Kennedy, who addressed an audience of 88,000. President Kerr praised Strong ' s academic and administrative achievements and entrusted him with the duties of the office of Chancellor. In his inaugural address, Strong warned that stifling of free inquiry in a University would destroy its and intellectual worth. Free universities make for a free society, and a free society, for the sake of its future, must ever uphold free inquiry within its The principle address of the day was given by President Kennedy who told the audience that Knowledge, not hate, is the passkey to the future.
