Fidelio On Sunday, October 8, the San Francisco Opera arrived at the Greek Theatre to present Fidelio, Beethoven ' s only opera. The opera, which has been an annual occasion on the Berkeley campus for the past five years, was brought to the campus by the William Hearst Foundation and the Committee for Arts and Lectures. The day was warm and bright and the near perfect. The story is of Leonore ' s effort to rescue her husband from a dungeon while masquerading as a youth by the name of Fidelio. The production was by Dino Yannopoulos, the orchestra was conducted by Leopold Ludwig, and the stars of the production were Gre Brouwenstijn, Paul Schoeffler, Marilyn Horne, and Fritz Uhl.

THE STANFORD AXE Give ' em the axe, the axe, the axe, Give ' em the axe, the axe, the axe, Give ' em the axe, Give ' em the axe, Give ' em the axe, Where? Right in the neck, the neck, the neck, Right in the neck, the neck, the neck, Right in the neck, Right in the neck, Right in the neck, There! Students stand in silence to give respect to Andy Smith. The Andy Smith Legend At the annual Big Game Rally a eulogy to Andy Smith is read. It is a tribute to Cal ' s famed Team coach. Andy Smith was the coach from 1916 to 1926, when he contacted pneumonia and died while on a trip in the East. His famous Team won 36 games and tied 2 in the years from 1920 to 1923. But Andy Smith was more than a coach — he was a great friend of students and a spirit of athletics. His funeral was held at the entrance to Memorial Stadium, and at his request his ashes were scattered over the Stadium. The players ' bench in the Stadium is dedicated to him with the following quotation by Smith inscribed on the bench: We do not want men who will lie down bravely to die, but men who will fight valiantly to live. Winning is not everything and it is far better to play the game squarely and lose than to win at the sacrifice of an ideal. This is the true spirit of California Athletics. THE STANFORD JONAH When the training days are done, And the Big Game ' s just begun, When there ' s music in the air, When our team runs on the field, Stanford knows her fate is sealed, For the Golden Bear has left his lair. When the yells from lusty throats Start to getting Stanford ' s goats, And the rooting section seems a howling mob, Then you grab your hat and shout, You let folks know you ' re about, For you know that Stanford ' s Jonah ' s on the job. CHORUS So then it ' s up with the Blue and Gold, Down with the Red. California ' s out for a victory, We ' ll drop our battle axe on Stanford ' s head. When we meet her, our team well surely beat her. Down on the Stanford Farm, there ' ll be no sound, When our Oski rips through the air Like our friend, Mr. Jonah, Stanford ' s team will be found In the tummy of the Golden Bear.
