MUFtFORD STOSE Dem el Sloth-, MISS KATHERINE TOWLE Dem el Woo administration officers The offices of the Deans are ever humming with the machinery of valuable advice and guidance adminis- tered by our highly capable staff of Deans. Their strongest hope is to establish a feeling of friendliness among the student body and spread an acquaint- ance of the office as a place where students can meet and talk with the deans, rather than appear only when confronted by a problem which evokes an unavoid- able visit. The success of their constant campaign to make this office known as a real student service cen- ter is evidenced by the continual line of appointment seekers filing in and out of rcom 201 in the Adminis- tration building each day. MRS. CATHERINE QUIRE Associate Dna Womm Dean Hurford Stone, who is in his twenty-seventh year with the University, spent half of this time on the Dean ' s staff at UCLA. His wide experience and interest in student affairs ably equip him for his duty as counselor and advisor to the numerous and various personal concerns of the members of the student body. One of Dean Stone ' s main subjects for advice is the achievement of high academic standards, but his Phi Beta Kappa, fine example as it is, is easier advised than attained. Dean Stone is active in civic organizations such as YMCA, Rotary International, etc., and has shown his enthusi- asm in upholding the new Student Union as chairman of the committee on Administration. In the same capacity. Miss Katherine Towle, Dean of Women and Associate Dean of Students, along with her assistants, lends aid to students in every way possible, in order that they may attain worthwhile and satisfying educational objectives during their undergraduate days in the University. In her own words she sums up the aim of her position, As Dean of Women, my primary concern is the over-all welfare of women students and we work closely together in all facets of student life and activities. Since Dean Towle ' s graduation from the University of California, her various positions have included Senior Editor of the University of California Press and administrative assistant to the Vice President and Provost of the University of California. As a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, she became Di- rector of the U.S. Marine Corps Women ' s Reserve, and received the first appointment as Director of Women Marines in the regular Marine Corps. 14
