the regents ' message We are all familiar with the classic allusion to that basic university situation involving the teacher, Hopkins, on one end of a log and a student on the other. While the primary factor of fine teaching. as exemplified by Hopkins, is recognized, the Regents are continually reminded of the inadequacy of that Hopkins log. Today, universities are faced with imposing and challenging problems. Man ' s horizons constantly are being expanded, and constantly must universities be moving into new fields of educational endeavor. Teaching must keep pace with the demands of a new age — must, indeed, inspire its greatest achievement. Thanks to a long line of education-minded governors and legislators, the University of California has been enabled to meet its responsibilities as new and pressing needs arise: has been able to build up a powerful faculty—without which no university can achieve real greatness. The river rises no higher than its source, and a university is great and strong as its faculty is great and strong. Our faculty members rank among the foremost scholars of the nation. Whether in the humanities, or in medicine, or in the research laboratories, the men who represent the University are pre-eminent. But the ever-increasing prestige of our University imposes upon the Board of Regents corresponding obligations. and it has constantly before it the necessity of securing for its faculty members facilities commensurate with their highest teaching goals. 12

governor ' s message In selecting as the theme for the 1955 edition of the Blue and Gold, the editors have chosen a challenging topic as the motif for this year ' s book. GOODWIN J. KNIGHT Govemor Few of us are fully aware of the multifaceted nature of this common word in our vocabulary. In one form, it symbolizes anything which is based upon a solid foundation, is free from flaw and merits trust. In another of its definitions it stands for a search for facts and motives which probes deeper than ordinary curiosity. In still another sense, it indicates communication by speech and the sensation of hearing. It would appear that in this common English word we have a definition of what should constitute the nature of a great university as well as a statement of the broader aspects of principles of learning and teaching in such an institution.
