LONG LINES of new students stood waiting to meet President Sproul and his gracious wife. The faculty reception committee smiled and chatted with the newcomers. Members of the senior reception committee nervously wound their way through the crowd. New students—end a number of old who had crashed the party—mingled with the variety of people from California, distant states, and foreign lands. THIS LAST March the University became 83 years old. The academic procession filed its way up to the sun-warmed Greek Theatre where students, alumni and friends waited for the Charter Day ceremonies to begin. Lewis Douglas, former ambassador to Great Britain, spoke to the receptive audience. Later that day Kenneth Pitzer was presented with the outstanding alumni of the year award. And the University had become a year older.
