FOREWORD An epochal period has transpired during the school year covered by this sixty-eighth Blue and Gold. Events of far reaching significance in the world without have vitally fected the world within, leaving its mark on the school life around which our thoughts revolve. World War II has engulfed a great section of civilization and here at the University of California, the student at his books has felt its effect. The first peace time conscription in the history of our nation has taken men in all walks of life for military training. College students were no exception and many of our classmates were called to the service of their country. Long has California been known as a University of free thought and liberal education. Yet political theory has in many instances given away to political reality as the students united to await the nation ' s crisis. However, we remained objective in our views and argumentative to the best of our democratic traditions. As much as we felt events from the outside, college life went on as usual. We enjoyed to the fullest all the scholastic, athletic, social, and fraternal ties that only a great University can grant. Wilbert Bernard Fountain
