President and Mrs. Sproul welcome new students to their first University function The President ' s Reception, ushering three thousand incoming students into their first major campus event, climaxed a full week of orientation parties, teas, and tours. In Hearst Gymnasium, which was transformed into a spacious garden, the students were greeted by faculty members who formally presented them to President and Mrs. Sproul. Whisked from the receiving line to the stag-lined dance floor by members of the Students ' Reception Commit- tee, the freshmen were introduced to other members of their class. Throughout the evening, the omnipresent members of the Reception Committee kept all new students actively participating in every event so that no one would be left out of the merry-making. A Tree-sitters committee especially devised for guest administrators and professors provided entertainment for those not dancing. Informality was the keynote of the evening as the old fashioned country dances and name tags helped break the ice. Freshmen made and renewed acquaintances while dancing to the music of Art Rowley, while others made new friends chatting near the mirror-like pool and around the ever popular punch bowl. 30

Ray Lyman Wilbur tells of Our Pacific Destiny at the 73rd Charter Day Anniversary CHARTER WEEK Seventy-three years young, the University of California invited her seven campuses to a birthday party in March. Lasting one week, the theme of the party was as varied as it was interesting. President Sproul presided over Greek Theatre exercises in which Ray Lyman Wilbur spoke on Our Pacific Destiny. Honored with Doctor of Laws degrees were Thomas Mann and James Moffitt. More interest in Greek was offered by Dr. Ivan M. Linforth as he discussed The Greeks and Their Gods. Dr. Linforth was this year ' s faculty member chosen to do research in his special field and sum up his findings ing the natal festivities. The evening spotlight fell upon the Alumni Banquet at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. President of this vast collection of University ' s children, Charles Stetson Wheeler presided at the Banquet and presented Dr. Wilbur and President Sproul as guest speakers of the evening. A piano concert by Artur Rubenstein added musical interest and gave a finishing touch to the birthday bration. California-Stanford rivalry is forgotten when their presidents meet on a common platform Sproul and the colors lead the procession of Ph.D ' s. to the Greek Theatre 32
