One of the great privileges of serving as Chancellor of The University of Calgary is the opportunity, if only fleetingly, of meeting on Convocation Day many of you whose pictures appear in these pages. As you crossed the stage, one by one at Convocation, that moment synthesized your years of effort and your successful achievement of a goal. You are the University's raison d'etre, the breath and pulse of the institution. Each of you has added a strength and a vital dimension to The University of Calgary and it is my hope that the reputation of your Alma Mater will continue to grow and be enhanced by your continuing personal and professional growth. We trust that your experience here has provided you with courage to meet the challenges that lie ahead. As you leaf these pages in years to come, may they elicit many happy memories of a meaningful chapter in your life. Muriel Kovitz Chancellor img 41 gf?

I appreciate the invitation extended to me to submit a brief message for inclusion in this year's edition of the Tallystick. This publication always gives me much pleasure, portraying as it does in graphic form an overview ofthe year's events and the people who had a hand in making them noteworthy. One's undergraduate years slip by all too quickly --in retrospect at any rate -- and I am sure the Tallystick will in years to come bring back happy memories of your university years and of friendships formed there. A topic receiving much attention these days is Canadian unity, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage graduates of The University of Calgary to play their part in examining the issues which will determine Canada's future and to enter into the debate on the future of our nation. The outcome of this and other important issues facing this country at the present time are of immense importance to us all, and I would hope that the knowledge you have acquired during your university years will equip you to appraise events objectively and deter you from accepting the opinions of others as your own. I hope you will get involved and not let yourselves be carried along by events as though you had no control over themg your voice needs to be heard by those making the decisions today as your generation must live with those decisions in the years to come. My congratulations to those of you pictured among the graduates and commiserations to those who were disappointed. To those who leave I wish good luck and happiness, and to those who will be continuing their studies, welcome back. W. A. Cochrane President
