The value of fibrinolysin fherapy for peri- pheral vascular fhrombosis and hyaline membrane disease. A double-blind sfudy evaluafing combi- nafion drug fherapy analgesia in cancer pafienfs. The anfi-cancer value of AB-l32, one of a series of dual anfagonisfs. ,599 PHARMACOLOGICAL STUDY - Paul Loree Mr. Wiggin, sfudying under Dr. House- mann of fhe Pharmacology Deparfrnenf, worked ,wifh immafure rafs in an efforf fo produce fhe hypofhyroid sfafe by iniecfing 300 microcuries of I131 infraperifoneally. He 'Found fhaf in his lof of l00 rafs fhaf 'lhe basal mefabolism rafe, body weighf, and hearl' rafe significanfly decreased af- fer fwo and one-half weeks, and fhaf fhis mefhod seemed superior fo surgery or fhe use of anfifhyroid drugs. '27 l PURIFICATION OF THYROID PROTEINS BY COLUMN CHROMOTOGRAPHY Joseph Armenia By sfepwise elufion column chromof09' raphy on diefhylaminoefhyl cellulose fhyr0' globulin was purified fo approximafely 992 ulfracenfrifugal homogeneify from 6 crude saline exfracf of fhyroid gland. L TISSUE IMMUNIZATION - Roberl' Genco. Tissue immunizafion sfudies were conducfecl in fhe lab- The long acfing coronary vasodilafor enfaeryfhrifal fefranifrafe produces a sfafisfically signifiicanf decrease in The nifroglycerine requiremenfs of pafienfs wifh an- gina pecforis. Addifion of franquilizers or phenobarbifal fails fo enhance fhe acfion of fhe drug alone. Six hundred pafienfs freafed in fhe psychiafric service of E. J. Meyer Memorial Hospifal wifh Promazine were found fo have neifher physical nor chemical evidence of he afofoxicify or bone marrow cle ression. These side eflzcfs have been reporfed for chloor romazine. Trans- ienf hypofension was fhe only side eigecl' presenf wifh Promazine as used on fhis service according fo fhe manu- facl'urer's suggesfed dosage schedule. II6 orafories of Dr. Ernesf Beufuer in fhe Deparfmenf of Bac- feriology and Immunology. Animal immunizafion wifh salivar glands was fhe basic area of sfudy. lf was found fhal' afler immunizafion wifh submaxillary glands, rab- bifs may produce anfibodies fhaf acf in vifro wifh some of fheir own salivary glands. This fype of anfibody is referred fo as an au'l'oan'l'ibody. The formafion of aufoanfibodies is a remarkable phe- nomena and has been shown fo be associafed wifh sev- eral human diseases, some of which are of proven aufo- immune efiology. These experimenfs were direcfed af elucidafing Siorgren's Syndrome, a human disease char- acferized by lack of salivary and lacrimal secrefions.

I L tl -J. I. I ir L' TRANSPORT OF INERT GASES THROUGH THE SKIN AT VARYING AM- BIENT TEMPERATURES - Roberf A. Klocke, Gail H. Gurfner The fransporf of inerf gas from fhe blood fhrough fhe skin info an airfighf chamber was measured af various ambienf 'Iemperafures in a subiecf breafhing a mix- fure of oxygen and iner'I' gas. Comparison of fhe rafes of fransporf of argon, helium and nifrogen showed fhaf gas fransporf fhrough fhe skin is Iimifed by fhe skin dif- fusion barrier and is unaffecfed by fhe fofal cufaneous blood flow. Laferal sliding flap surgery has been per- formed on humans fo correcf undesirable aesfhefics in fhe mandibular incisar region. Noehren, Assisfanf Professor of Infernal Medicine, fo perfecf a complefe fesf of cardio-pulmonary funclion. Basic fo fhis procedure was fhe developmenf of a quick and accurafe mefhod of blood efher deferminafion. - In Anesfhesiology, Vol. 22, No. 4, July-Augusf I96I, a mefhod for fhe anal sis of efhyl efher confenf in blood by gas chromafograplny was published. The gas is ex- fracfed in 'I'he fonomefer of a Van Slyke apparafus and, :ffer column separafion, is analyzed by fhermal conduc- lvl y. MMG' Roberf Wilson sfudied fhe circulafing levels of anfi- hemophilic globulin in bofh normal and hemophilic sub- Ecfs under a granf from 'Ihe Nafional Insfifufes of Healfh. is subiecfs were eighf members of fhe Senior Class. Affer fracfionizafion of a blood sample fo obfain pure anfi-hemophilic globulin, serial dilufions againsf a known quanhfy would give fhe subiecf's level. By drawing samples periodically, he showed fhaf fhis level changes quanflfafively from monfh fo monfh. He presenfed his sfudyi af fhe I02nd Annual Session of fhe ADA in Phila- delp ia.
