1fv ,, .r -wg.---., . -- Golden Anniversary R, CARLOS C. ALDEN this year rounds out a full half-century of service l to the University of Buffalo School of Law, during which he was Dean for tliirty-two years. Born in Washington, lllinois, he had moved to New York city via Bangor, Maine, when he was offered the Deanship in 1004. Since he had traveled such a circuitous route to the school, the general consensus seemed to be that he must now be made to settle down for a whileg he has since become so much more than just a part of the Law School that for the past three decades any hint that Dr. Alden might consider moving away would have been fighting words to the whole school. lt would be impossible to begin to list his honors and achievements in the field of law, for he has long been an indefatigable scholar, but two items must be mentioned. He served for thirty-three years as President of the Legal Aid Bureau, of which he was one of the foundersg and, of course, the school is familiar with, and proud of, the Alden Gold Key Award, given in recognition of outstanding con- tribution by a law student to the field of legal publication. There are things which are considerably more important to a law student, however, than what the world thinks of one of his professorsl most of us are con- cerned with what E think of him, with what we will carry away with us into our own practice. We will remember a man who loves the law, but who is keenly aware of its faults and has done an enormous amount of work to correct theml a man who never loses sight of the human factor in a field which is so largely con- cerned with distilled ideas rather than personsg a mari who exemplifies to the highest degree the ethics and fair play he has unceasingly sought to instill in his students, No one who has heard him will ever forget that magnificent voice, in- sisting that the law is not a panacea but a last resort, to be employed when all other means have failed. Through his lips speak Honesty, Humor, and Dignity, and for these the l'Doc will outlive all of us. We have said that it is impossible to detail the honors and accomplishments 'he man in this short space, but it is not impossible to render our own small 'ieasure of thanks to the Fates for having given us a share of Dr. Alden's fifty fears the School. .47 - 4-
