Tl-IE UNIVERSITY 1927-1963 The University of Bridgeport was still rather a nebulous concept in 1926. However, through the efforts of E. Everett Cortright, his fellow Rotarians, and members of the community, the co-educational, non-sec- tarian, independent institution of higher learning known as the Junior College of Connecticut was established in 1927. Growth and progress have been key words in the life of this in- stitution. In 1947 the University of Bridgeport received its charter and its academic units soon included the Colleges of Arts and Science, Busi- ness Administration, Engineering, and Nursing, as well as the junior Col- lege of Connecticut and the Evening Division. Further expansion took place when Weylister School, Fones School, and Arnold College were incorporated into the University. While the University of Bridgeport has experienced phenomenal growth, both physically and academically, it yet has kept to the goal ex- pressed by Chancellor Halsey: The University of Bridgeport will become only as large as it can be good, as good as its resources can properly man- age, as large and as good as its supporters will assist it to become.
