Kicking off the week of Homecoming was the second annual Color Those Hogs 5k, benefiting the University of Arkansas’ Full Circle Campus Food Pantry. The event was open to alumni, students, and Razorback fans alike. Planning for this years’ Homecoming began directly after the 2014 Homecoming Celebration. The Student Alumni Board worked tirelessly to refine events, plan a Homecoming theme, and schedule dates. The race through downtown Fayetteville was introduced the previous year, making it one of the newest additions to the list of Homecoming festivities. The canned food drive associated with the 5K became the largest food drive in UA history in 2015. Alyssa Strodel, the marketing coordinator for the Arkansas Alumni Association, told the Traveler newspaper that the Student Alumni Board’s Homecoming Team has no intention of slowing down. “Although this is a new tradition, it has quickly become one of the most anticipated events during homecoming with the race starting and ending on campus,” Strodel said. After a series of events plagued the campus at the University of Missouri, over 200 students gathered in support of those affected by the discrimination and prejudice affecting the community in Columbia. Students locked arms and circled together around the Union Fountain as a gesture of unity in a time of such separation. Senior Kristen Phantazia, president of Profound Pioneers Entertainment Group, or PPEG, organized the event that took place on November 12. The peaceful rally united members of several organizations on campus like Profound, including Black Students Association (BSA) and Students Advocating Stronger Sisterhood (SASS). This day is encouraging because it shows that we are all diverse, Profound member Kristen Smith said. “It shows a We can get together on issues and it can show our support beyond just saying it. We can actually do something. 11 After opening remarks, various students and supporters came forward to express their support for all those who have experienced any kind of prejudice. This included Xavier Shackelford, who stepped forward to quote the poem “The Test of a Man,” a work admired nationally by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha. An excerpt from the poem is as follows: “The test of a man is the fight that he makes. The grit that he daily shows. The way that he stands upon his feet and takes life’s numerous bumps and blows...It isn’t the victory after all, but the fight that a brother makes. A man when driven against the wall, still stands erect and takes the blows of fate with his head held high.” Students also encouraged each other to share their experiences in order to heal any individual hurt as a community. “I am very proud of my fellow classmates, this is about equality against lack of sensitivity,” junior engineering student Theo Christian said. “I am just so very proud.” 1 j fylA • jiiii r f V 4 1 W 4 BLACKOUT RALLY 19
