An outsider watching the years go by at the University of Arkansas would not notice much change. Every August, students move into residence halls. The Greek rush period passes and new pledges begin the experience. The students look the same to the outsider and seem to do the same types of things. Over the course of the year, they study, throw parties, go to football games, get parking tick¬ ets, make relationships and break them just as those before them did. In December and May, graduation takes place and those that gained their degree move on to the next phase of life. To the outsider, the students this year were no different than any other year. To him, the only meaningful change in the university was the addition and subtraction of build- ln gs and the renovations that kept the halls in working order. However, if the outsider simply asked those involved in the U of A, like the professors and the administrators, they would tell him that every year is filled with potential. The goals and expectations of each new class sustain life in the concrete buildings and sidewalks. Without the energy that was invested in the uni- veisity from each student, the U of A would be a lifeless set of build- ln gs with no intellectual or personal growth. Because the outsider never took the time to invest himself in the university or the students, he never felt the one thing that-made the university a living, breathing entity—ambition. The people who chose to involve themselves in the university were those who under¬ stood the value and importance of education and the future it provides. The desire to succeed is not a tangible thing that can be seen, but it is felt. When one walked through the halls of the U of A or talked with professors or students, one quickly learned w hat kept the university growing every year. The fresh batch of ambition that came to the university every August was what caused the academic value of the university to increase each year. Although the students may look the same from year to year, it is the personalities and the desire to succeed that made every student different from each other and from those that went before them.
