UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS Campus, State, Nation Go ‘Hog Wild’ On an autumn afternoon in 1909, Coach Hugo Bezdek referred to his undefeated University of Arkansas Cardinal football team as “a wild bunch of razorback hogs.” Soon after that day, the Universi¬ ty adopted the “Razorback” as the official mascot of the school. Since that fall afternoon, a spirit known simply as “Hog Wild” cap¬ tured the enthusiasm of a campus, state, and even a nation. Coach Bezdek probably did not realize that his candid reference to “razorback hogs” would come to re¬ present the pride of an entire state. 1982 saw the spirit continue. Not only did the “Hog” represent a fine athletic tradition, but it also symbolized an entire mood of the northwest Arkansas campus. It be¬ came noted many times that Fay¬ etteville proved to be the only place in the world where “you can call someone a ‘Pig,’ and have it considered a compliment.” The 1982 Miss America and Miss U.S.A. grew up “Calling the Hogs” in Arkansas. National Razorback sports telecasts, Frank Broyles’ color commentary on A.B.C., and Lou Holtz’s appeareances on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” awakened a nation to the “Pigmania” in the “’Land of Opportunity.” The 1982 RAZORBACK found it necessary to honor the “Hog Wild” spirit, represented by the yearbook’s namesake, for becoming a bond of pride and excellence for the University and State of Arkan¬ sas.
