This building was formerly the state capitol build¬ ing. In the foreground of the picture is the famous cannon, Lady Baxter. About two-thirds of the State of Arkansas is covered with forests. Also contributing to the rich scenic beauty are nearly a thousand lakes, most of which are natural lakes. They are found in all parts of the state.

Still the main source of wealth in this part of the state, cotton continues to play a most vital role in the lives of the people of southern and eastern Arkansas. The river, too, retains its importance in the economic development of the region, and serves as a chief means of transportation.
