'mann sqamcas Al X' GIL L. JONES, D EAN No more conclusive proof of the real value of a liberal arts college could be found than that offered in the posi- tion of the College of Arts and Sciences in the University of Arkansas today. The university was originally es- tablished, not as a cultural institution, but as a technical school. Only through its own worth has the arts college risen, and only In-cause of intelligent leadership has it re- tained its high place. Inspired by a faith in the worth of a liberal education as the greatest safeguard of democracy, Dean Jones has worked always for freedom ot' thought and a spirit of intellectual freedom, the essence of such a college. If the opportunity for free, human and individual development. is to be denied the born leaders of democracy, the colleges of liberal arts and democracy will alike perish l'rom America. 'l'hat is the challenge Dean Jones offers the students of today.
