Dean Division of Arts and Sciences The general aim of the Department of Sociology is to create in the students the ability to think critically and to analyze objectively society and culture. The department ob- jective is to train the student in the proper handling of con- ceptual tools. To acquaint him with methods of research, to foster in him a scientific attitude toward societal data and Cultural phenomena. The courses are designed to provide students with the broad knowledge of society and human relations essential for effective living. To familiarize students with the nature of the scientific approach in terms of gathering data. To provide the necessary prerequisite training for stu- dents interested in advanced degree in sociology. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers a wide variety of courses dealing with contemporary society as well as preliterate societies. Recently, with the establishment of the Anthropological laboratory in cooperation with the University of Arkansas, the department has been in a position to develop an en- riched curriculum in Anthropology. a aaa Department of Vocational Arts The Department of Vocational Arts has designed a | sound program for the students who plan to work toward a degree in Trade and Industrial Education. The courses of- fered are welding, brickmasonry, tailoring, mechanical draw- ing. Cosmetology, electronics, carpentry-auto mechanics and short-term courses in machine shop, applied electricity and woodwork. The Department of Vocational Arts is housed in a con- temporary structure equipped with standard makes of ma- chinery and other equipment which enables the faculty to train young men for employment in industry as mechanics, in the teaching field as teachers of trades, and as teachers of : Industrial Arts. Department of Biology and General Sciences The department endeavors to support the stated aims of the college. Its objectives are (1) to develop in the stu- dent a wholesome attitude toward healthful living and (2) to create in the minds of the students a curiosity which is conducive to constructive thinking in their search for facts pertaining to the laws of nature and the biological pheno- mena of life. The end is met under the able direction of Dr. Rufus L. Caine. The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biological Science and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology may be earned after the student has successfully completed ninety-five (95) semester hours of undergraduate work as specified in the curriculum then pursue a prescribed training program in one of the cooperating hospitals. He is then eligible to take the Medical Technology Examination administered by the Board of Registry of Medical Technologist of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. The degree of Bachelor of Science in Medical Tech- nology is offered in cooperation with the University of Arkansas Medical Center at Little Rock, St. Joseph’s Hos- pital in Memphis, Tennessee, and St. Vincent Infirmary, Little Rock, Arkansas. The curriculum is so designed to: (1) meet the needs of students who desire some fundamentals of Biology as a part of their general education requirements, (2) prepare students for the teaching of Biological Science, and (3) pre- pare students for graduate work and related such as Nurs- ing, Medicine, Dentistry, and Laboratory Technology. A new Science building valued at approximately $1,200,- 000.00 will add to existing science facilities. Radiation and General Research Laboratories will be available to students and faculty. Independent study and senior students pro- jects will be encouraged for deserving students. p en. Dr. Rufus L.
