HUMANITIES HAROLD JI. WOOLARD, Th.D. Philosophy and Religion Art Department has annual Christmas project. The Division of the Humanities, headed by Dr. Woolard, enrolls a large number of the stu- dents here. Students have the choice of two majors within the division, English and General Humanities. The general objective of courses in the division is to guide the student’s learning into broad fields of knowledge so he may be more adequately prepared to engage in satisfy- ing relationships with his fellow humans. Fre- quent art exhibits, open to the public, attract many local citizens to the campus; and the university cooperates with local music and dramatic groups by making free attendance possible at cultural events. The departments of art, English, speech and drama, music, phi- losophy and religion, and modern languages comprise the division. A scene from the Diary of Anne Frank. 21

EDUCATION The Division of Education prepares students to take their places as fully certified teachers in both elementary and secondary schools. The B.A. degree, with a major in Elementary Education, prepares the student for teaching in the elementary schools. The B.A. or B.S. degree, in- cluding an area of concentration in secondary educa- tion, and major-minor in subject matter fields, prepares the student to teach in the high schools. Special emphasis is placed upon closely supervised directed teaching in the public school, and upon independent study in vari- ous fields of subject matter. Of deep importance is the program of Special Methods of Teaching in High School. . These courses involve working out special procedures in the liberal arts and sciences, within which the student is majoring, under the immediate sponsorship of the student’s major professor or academic advisor. A major is offered in the Department of Elementary Education, plus full state certification courses. An area of concen- tration is offered in the Department of Secondary Edu- cation which leads to full state certification for high school teaching. JUANITA PRATER, M.A. Elementary Education EVERETT L. EDMONDSON, Ph.D: Education and Director of Evening Division 20 Dr. Edmondson discusses Education requirements with a student.
