Old Main and the Student Union - both are University of Arizona landmarks. But a period of 60 years stands between these two buildings which so well re ure- sent the old and the new. Back in 1891 when the University first openecl its doors to students, Old Main was the University. To those first students there was no campus of modern buildings and palm-lined drives - just Old Main, located way out in the desert, several miles from the city of Tucson. The school grew up in the next half century, as did Tucson itself. Now in the midst of the Old Pueblois sprawling settlement, the University boasts 55 buildings on its campus of S5 acres. As the fountain in front of Old Main stands as a memorial to the dead of World WVar 1, so stands the Student Union building, dedicated in 1951 to the Arizona dead of 1rVorld W7ar II. The bell from the U.S.S. Arizona, sunk at Pearl Harbor, rings from the Union tower which dominates the campus. The million-dollar building, sleek and modern, serves as brick-and-mortar proof of the Universityis progress since the days when Old Main was new. K Student Union
