This will represent one more in a series of rapid strides towards maturity and independence. The growth in physical facilities in 1963-64 is evidenced by the opening of the magnificent new University Library and the start on the first unit of the new Engineering Complex. Next year should see a surge of building in Calgary that will challenge comparison with that on any other campus in the whole of Canada. In the past four years your enrolment has nearly doubled (from 1331 to 2420), but in the same period the full-time teaching staff has nearly tripled (from 60 to 175) and the non-academic staff has increased more than three times (from 80 to 263). All this is tangible evidence of the deter¬ mination of your Board of Governors, your Government, and your Legislature to provide you with the best facilities and the best instruction possible. But it is you, the students, who will make the reputation of your University in the world around you. If U.A.C. is really to grow in wisdom and in stature, it is you who will provide that growth. I have every confidence in the development of your great institution in the years ahead and in the contribution its students will make in the life of their Province and of the world at large. May you all find happiness and success wherever fate may lead you in the days to come. Walter ' H. Johns, President. DEDICATED TO DR.AND MRS.TAYLOR We respectfully dedicate this volume of the Tally Stick to Dr. and Mrs. M. G. Taylor with deep gratitude for their four years of service to our university. UAC has been fortunate to have Dr. Taylor’s leadership during its first years. A young man among university presidents, he has brought youth and enthusiasm to his tasks. As he pointed out in a speech, “a university must be youthful in its outlook — with the rebellion, the risk-taking, the excitement of youth, and, to a degree, the uncertainty of youth.” Rebellious, venturesome, excited, sometimes un¬ certain — UAC has been all these in its short history. There was no uncertainty in Dr. Taylor’s aims for UAC. In 1960 he said that this could become a great university, and for the next four years he worked with unswerving dedication to achieve that goal. Dr. Taylor had set himself no easy task. He has a lofty conception of the uni¬ versity: “a community of scholars, devoted to the pursuit of learning, engaged in the adventure of the discovery of knowledge, concerned with raising the quality of life.” By his dedication and enthusiasm Dr. Taylor attracted many fine scholars to our community, men who wanted to help create a new university. Dr. Taylor set a high standard for the students of UAC. In his first message to the student body, he said, “your primary purpose here is your own intellectual de¬ velopment. You are here to think, to criticize, and to create. It is on your intel¬ lectual achievements that you will be judged, and I remind you that our standards are high.” Student leaders found in him an interested, sympathetic adviser and at times an outspoken critic. In his addresses to students, Dr. Taylor tried to com¬ municate his own enthusiasm for learning and the life of the intellect. The library building which opened this term is perhaps the most tangible evidence of Dr. Taylor’s efforts on behalf of UAC. He believes that a library is truly the heart of a university, and he has worked unceasingly to improve library facilities here. From a beautiful campus site, UAC’s land is developing into a beautiful campus. It has been said that “not only do we shape our buildings; our buildings shape us.” Dr. Taylor has worked closely with architects to plan a campus that is more than functional. It was his vision to provide an environment suitable for creativity; an atmosphere designed for learning. We have a long task ahead of us to fulfill Dr. Taylor’s prediction of greatness at UAC, but under his leadership we have made an auspicious start. Mrs. Taylor, too, has become well known to many students on campus. As Honorary President of Adelphe, she took part in many functions of the society. At an Adelphe-sponsored charm seminar, Mrs. Taylor, last year chosen one of Canada’s ten-best-dressed women, spoke on wardrobe selection and social graces. Mrs. Taylor was interested in the role of the Arts in university life. She was active in Calgary theatre, and sponsored a drama award given yearly to a UAC student. Students who visited the Taylor home also knew Mrs. Taylor as a gracious hostess and the mother of two fine children. Our best wishes go to Dr. and Mrs. Taylor as they prepare to make their home in Victoria. And our congratulations go to the students and faculty of the University of Victoria. Our university community is losing a distinguished leader and two good friends, but it is a better place because of their four years here. 6 , ,, fWlllUill Photo by JACK 1)1. KORMi rntmmmm UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, CALGARY OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL calgary, Canada January 30, 1964 It is with a sense of deep regret that I write these words for the Yearbook of the University of Alberta, Calgary. As you know, this is the last time that I shall have the privilege and pleasure of speaking to you through these pages. I little thought when I wrote to you a year ago that such would be the case. But as each of you will come to know in the adventure of life, a man must do what he must do. As I look back to my arrival here, when we moved to our new campus, I realize that what now seems to me a very short space of time is actually a long period of some four years. It has seemed much shorter because of the joys of working with students in which Mrs. Taylor has happily shared. I leave this University richer in experience and more blessed in rewards than I have deserved. With you, I have seen this campus develop in intellectual and physical growth to such a stature that we rightfully take our place among the Univer¬ sities of Canada. Mrs. Taylor joins with me in thanking you for the pleasure that we have had in our association with you and in wishing you and this University every measure of success in the years ahead. 8 ► ' Lights of books shining on the dark fields... the seeking-forever in the night...’ -Thomas Wolfe Photo courtesy of Matthews Studio 9 PHOTOB ■?«; ■■%] ' , Ik - ' ' ■ ' ■■km ' ktk k - %n fa® kkkk ■ ’Ik ' - ' kk 1 • ■• • - .- . .:• •• •. •• ' : j ' .-- JEEBl iv Student Activity ! i 1 1 - . fm V I IJjT Ljl f 1 k 1 Achievement... IN ME MORI AM Courtesy of the Calgary Herald JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY 35th President of the United States of America 1917-1963 ■ The liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society. Its strength is drawn from the will of free people committed to great ends. . . . Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country. The hour is late — but the agenda is long. We prefer world law, in the age of self-determination, to world war in the age of mass extermination. Peace is the necessary precondition for the advance of freedom . . . Never have the nations of the world had so much to lose or so much to gain. Together we shall save our planet or together we shall perish in its flames. We want from you (students) not the sneers of the cynics nor the despair of the fainthearted. We ask of you enlightenment, vision, illumination. . . . A great university is always enlisted against the spread of illusion and on the side of reality. The future of any country which is dependent on the will and wisdom of its citizens is damaged . . . whenever any of its children is not educated to the fullest extend of his capacity. Of those to whom much is given, much is required. J. Nicol Registrar Miss D. E. Ryder Librarian A. F. Crumb Accountant Miss D. M. Christie Dietitian E. R. Mr. McCloskey was born in Ireland on November 1, 1939, the first child of a schoolteaching family. He attended St. Columb’s College, Londonderry, and in 1958 he entered Queen’s University, Belfast to study physics, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree with first class ho nours in 1962, and a Master of Science degree in 1963. He then entered the University of Alberta, Calgary, where he was working toward the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. He was expected to receive this degree in about two years’ time. Mr. McCloskey came to Alberta with the strongest academic recommendations from his previous professors at Belfast, who described him as “One of our best students in recent years and a man who may go far.” This recommendation was being justified by his work in Calgary where he was performing steadily, reliably and with foresight. At the personal level he showed himself to be a man of considerable responsibility, prepared to play his part in society. Earlier this summer he had discussions with Dr. Challice concerning the desirability of his continuing working toward the Ph.D. in Calgary, or alternatively returning home to Ireland, the discussion being occasioned by poor health among members of the family and his concern for their well being. The Department of Physics was pleased that he found it possible to reconcile his family responsibilities with the continuation of his studies. The Professors and the Graduate Students mourn the loss of a potentially fine physicist and an admirable member of society. They all extend their deepest sympathy to the family in the tragic loss of this fine son and brother. Dr. C. E. Challice, Professor and Head, Dept, of Physics. 58 and his victum I SPACE ATMOSPHERE Brenden Hanna This is a hell of an uncomfortable toilet seat. Michael Adam We have to look everywhere for food. The prediction made by my predecessor, Maurice Yacowar, that we would not have the two major problems of 1962-63, unfortunately proved to be somewhat in error. Lack of space was again a major problem with Council meetings being held in Adelphe Lounge, and the Students’ Union Building Commission of some thirty-odd members being jammed in a little nook near the bookstore. If 1 might just get in a small plug here to those of you who will be returning next year: the SUB Commission needs you! You may never get to use the SUB but “greater love hath no man for his fellow man than he who plants a fig tree in whose shade he will never sit.” Abie Okazaki and his boys (and girls ) did an excellent job and this is one of the real highlights of Students’ Union work this year. Let’s hope for the same high standard next year. Lack of funds was not too great a problem although many things did not get done in quite the style we may have hoped for, due to a tightly controlled budget. Next year’s Council should not have the burden of a deficit to start the year with, thanks, in large part, to the conscientious work of our business manager-director, Frank Stoddart. While a good part of this year’s time was taken up with the Autonomy Drive, many significant contributions were made in other fields, and indeed a few suc¬ cessful firsts were recorded. We managed to lure the delegates from the National Congress of CUS away from Edmonton down to Calgary for a weekend of Calgary hospitality. UAC also organized the inaugural seminar of the CUS Western Region on a very timely topic, “Confederation and Western Canada.” This proved a real success thanks to the work of Irvin Rootman and his committee. Our first venture into the field of good cheap entertainment for the students could not be rated a success but it was worth the try and may yet bear fruit in future years. University Week, Model Parliament and the truly delightful production of the “Fantasticks” by the Drama Society could also be classified as highlights of this year’s student activities. I’m sure the members of the many and varied clubs re¬ ceived much reward from their efforts which greatly contributed to the success of the Students’ Union this year. While the bright and smiling faces you see on this page met with some criticism this year, I think such criticism is inevitable and 1 feel that, on the whole, the Council members made a genuine contribution to a thankless job with no pay and lots of work. I know how much work they did and as student spokesman, 1 would like to express our sincere gratitude for their efforts on our behalf. To all those who are leaving UAC, may I extend Council’s sincere best wishes for your future, and to those who will be back, Council’s wish that you contribute to the future success of the Students’ Union by doing your bit. Spence (faculty adviser), Karen Falck (sec.), Earl Snider (vice chairman), Ed Mason (chairman). This year saw the National Federation of Canadian University Students (NFCUS) renamed to become the Canadian Union of Students (CUS). The objectives of CUS on campus during the year have been two-fold. First: the members started out with a determination to make CUS and its services better known at UAC. Second: The committee has been so organized that a large number of students have had an opportunity to develop and exercise leadership abilities. In keeping with the first objective, a bulletin board was erected in the main hall of the Arts and Education Building for the express purpose of bringing the many services and programs of the Union to the students’ attention. Nearly one hundred requests for information concerning scholar¬ ships, seminars, overseas employment, overseas travel and study in Europe were received. All the students who in any way helped CUS this year are to be highly commended for their fine work. Students are encouraged to watch for the many projects sponsored by CUS each year for many things, such as free trips to seminars, are offered, and yet few applications are received. This is a service organization for students; it is up to the students to take advantage of the services avail¬ able. Seated: Pat Vanziffle (secretary), Irene Kyle (co-chairman). Activities this year were highlighted by the annual visit of the Treasure Van; the week-long Share Campaign to raise funds for WUSC’S International Program of Action; a report on the 1963 International Seminar in Pakistan by UAC delegate Irene Kyle; the selection of Miss Carol Lynn Smith as UAC delegate to the 1964 Interna¬ tional Seminar; and two lecture series, one on “Contemporary Canadian Problems”, the other on “Canada’s Role in the International Community.” The WUSC campus committee way chaired by Irene Kyle, with a faculty committee consist¬ ing of Dr. Self, Dr. Terentiuk, Dr. Hartland-Rowe and Dr. Penelhum. 141 1 1 MV4R u m 1 m I P- wf f m 11 ? e ® V 1 ri mi 1 INTER-PARTY COMMITTEE Front: Don Tucker—Socred, Hans Brown—NDP, Gloria Dalton—Chairman, Brian Coulter—NDP, Abie Okazaki—PC. Russell Indicates new record 241 INTRAMURAL ACTIVITIES FLAG FOOTBALL The highlight of the fall term is the fast- moving, hard-hitting game of flag football. This year the smooth functioning educa¬ tion squad proved to be the team to beat. HOCKEY The hockey season this year was the best we have ever had. With each faculty represented we played through a complete schedule. As the weather turned against us, the finals were squelched and the Engineers crowned champion. YOU TOO CAN LOOK LIKE THIS BY PRACTISING OUR MOTTO, “A SPORT FOR EVERYONE, AND EVERYONE IN A SPORT.” BOWLING This year was another tremendous turn¬ out for intramural bowling. The new Fair- view Lanes, although spacious, could barely handle the 350 enthusiasts. This year’s com¬ petition was won by the Faculty of Forestry with a team total for five members of 2012. TENNIS This year’s intramural tennis was a smashing success. With six all-weather tennis courts at our disposal, and fabulous weather to match the courts, the balls never stopped flying until the win¬ ners were declared. It fust goes to show you have to be a King to organize. TRACK FIELD Track and field this year was even greater than last year. The cold weather did not deter hundreds of athletes who javelined, dis¬ cussed, shot putted, ran, hurdled, high and broad jumped, pole vaulted and clicked watches. Team totals were won by Education Males and Females. 245 t 1 _ ■ i r l INTRAMURAL AWARDS BASKETBALL Women—Navarsettes Men—Silver Seven FLAG FOOTBALL Education Eagles BADMINTON Women’s Singles Lynne Orman Janice Webber Mavis Munro Women’s Doubles Webber Hurl Orman Vander Valk Munro Keith SOCCER Education II CROSS COUNTRY Team—Arts and Science Hans Boerger Bill McKeever Russ Van Leusden TRACK AND FIELD Men—Education Women—Education TABLOID MEET Navarsettes GOLF Team—Arts and Science Frank Sutton Dennis Randall Jim Christie TENNIS John Emberson A1 Davis Rich King RUGGER Education SWIMMING Women—Marietta Portigal Dorothy Northam Joan Brodie Men—Team: Arts and Science Grant Russell Jerry Crawford Brian Scott VOLLEYBALL Women—Navarsettes Men—Staff ICE HOCKEY Engineers TABLE TENNIS Women—Lyn Anderson Mary Sekura Men—Wilf Wenzel John Emberson Ron Higa FREE THROW Skip Morgan Cor Ouwerkerk Joe Smith WRESTLING George Kinnear Cec Brown Bill Bergman George Jacobs FENCING John Price Gail Windsor George Simpson INTRAMURAL CHAMPIONS Women—Education Men—Education MINOR INTERVARSITY AWARDS BASKETBALL Women—Mary Sekura Wyona Pilling Pat Gehrke Men—Barry McCullough Peter Rosewarn Joe Smith RUGBY Gary Russ SKIING Charles Scott Frank Paynter Gordon Dixon CURLING Jill Michaluk Connie Wilcock Lynne Orman FENCING Doug Maishment Helmut Weiser VOLLEYBALL Women—Lynne Orman Betty A.
