Three departments make up the School of Mines. The Department of Geology, with all of Alaska as a laboratory, offers a well rounded curriculum to both undergraduates and graduate students. The outstanding faculty has contributed to research all over the world from Antarctica to Greenland. Together with celebrated guest lecturers, they provide practical and professional guidance for future geologists, and mining engineers. Actual tunnel and in-the-field work program provided by the Department of Mining and Metallurgy. In addition to meeting student needs, this department participates in nationally sponsored research carried out in their well-equipped laboratory. Again, the outdoor workshop that is Alaska adds immeasurably to the effectiveness of the practical courses given in the Department of Mining Extension. These courses are designed for the prospector in his search for Alaska's underground wealth.
