The Juneau-Douglas Community College meets the educational needs of those members of the com- munity not regularly served by the elementary or the high schools. The College serves adults of all ages who desire to complete the first two years of college work or to secure additional training through vo- cational courses. The College also enables adults to make up high school deficiencies, and to broaden and deepen their general education. The A.C.C. was established when the University of Alaska joined with the Anchorage Independent School District to plan the Colleges opening on February 8, 1954, under the direction of Dr. Leroy V. Good. A.C.C. considers its basic purpose to be the de- velopment of its students into responsible citizen- ship, to develop educationally those students who ex- pect to transfer to a senior college or university, to provide a two-year degree for students who do not plan on continuing after receiving an associate de- gree, to provide an opportunity for those adults who desire to continue and broaden their education and finally to provide specialized vocational training for those seeking it. The college is noted for its cultural contributions to the Community. Theatre arts are promoted through the Speech and Drama departments of the school, The Anchorage Community Chorus, The Film Society, and the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra are affiliated with the college. In 1960 the A.C.C. graduated ten students with associate degrees and has prepared many more to continue their education in advanced colleges.
