71' September 6, 1954, was an important date in our history for on that day seventy girls and one boy began what was to become the most unforgettable three years of their lives. Our students had come from near and far, even from other countries, and each brought a unique thing fthemselvesj. So complete were our discoveries that today, it seems impossible to recall that we were once strangers. For seven days we stumbled in that dream world of orientation but soon we awoke as if startled by the explosion of a bomb. That bomb was found to contain classes! Biology! Anatomy! Psychology! Microbiology! And more! And more! After spending one quarter dissecting cats, and frogs and looking at cadaver, the daily diet of roast beef and fluffy rice became intolerable. Our whirl of classes was soon interrupted by the receiving of our caps and uniforms. How proud we were of those new crisp outfits that were soon to feel the wear and tear of our unit training in the art of nursing. That first day on the unit is the most remembered one. We arose at 5:15 A. M. flater it was 6:15 A. MJ so we would be sure to be on time Qand also have time to stop our knees from shakingy. Like all other days that one ended and we passed the first test with what we thought were flying colors. During that memorable freshman year many things happened. Our school was no longer Jefferson- Hillman Hospital School of Nursing but had become University Hospital School of Nursing. June Burris entered the Miss Jefferson-Hillman contest as our candidate fbut lostj. And Lo and Behold we finally became sophomores! Then a short three months later - JUNIORS! We were sad to lose some of our classmates, but were happy to welcome many newcomers. This year Inge Kuers entered the Miss University Hospital contest as our candidate Qagain we lostl. This year we had the thrill of planning and attending the Junior-Senior Prom. At the end of the year we were the proud recipients of black bands presented to us by members of the graduating class at the annual Black Band Ceremony. 1957 finally arrived and we were the Class of 1957. The sparkle of diamond rings and the chorus of wedding bells were heard by many. We were busy with plans to go on psychiatric affiliations to Tuscaloosa and Houston, Texas, and to raise money for our Miss University Hospital candidate, Nancy Waddell four- come, no commentj. We had the pleasure of attending the Alumni Banquet and the Junior-Senior Prom. These were the last functions we attended as a class and we could not help but wonder at how fast the last three years had passed and what the next three years might hold for each of us. Graduation was upon us before we knew it and we were filled with mixed emotions. Sadness. for we were leaving the past and our many friends: excitement, for the future was before us with all of the mystery that it holds for the young, new graduate, and fear, for the unknown. June 2, 1957, the graduating class received their diplomas at the one hundred and twenty-sixth Com- mencement Exercise at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. September came, and with our presentation of our black bands to the incoming Senior Class our school days were gone. During a three year period, instructors have given us the ideals and principles that were given to them by their instructors. After guiding the development of our foundation they handed us the challange of the future. What we build on that foundation depends on each of us, for we have been shown, now we must do.
