Dr. Joseph F. Volker was born in New Jersey, March 9, 1913. In 1936 he received his D.D.S. degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry, A.B. in Chemistry, 19383 M.S. in Biochem- istry, 1939, Ph.D. in Biochemistry, 1941, from the University of Rochester. After an internship in dental surgery at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, New Jersey, he held Carnegie fellowships at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he did basic research in the etiology of dental caries and ultimately became Assistant Professor in the department of Biochemistry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. In 1942 he was appointed Professor of Clinical Dentistry at Tufts College Dental School, a position he held until his appointment as the Dean of the Tufts College Dental School in 1947. In 1948 he became dean of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. Dr. Volker led the infant University of Alabama School of Dentistry in less than ten years to one of the top ranking dental schools in the world. Under his able guidance many research grants have been given to not only the dental school but to the entire medical center as well. It is with this in mind that we proudly dedicate this 1957 DENTALA to Dean Joseph F. Volker.
