MEDICINE... serviced by the faculty of the Medical School, is being com- pleted. Another new building to house the Medical and Dental Colleges is being erected at a cost of approximately two million dollars. Jefferson-Hillman Hospital, principal teaching unit of the Medical College, is the ninth largest in North America. 1; serves 25,000 patients annually inside the hospital and 120,000 who seek medical aid in its out-patient clinics. Re- search programs in cancer, heart disease, blood diseases, mental disease and other fields are subsidized by the Fed- eral government to the extent of over $100,000 per year. The entire institution serves as a great facility for public service for the people of the State of Alabama. DR. JOSEPH F. VOLKER Dr. Roy R. Kracke, Dean of the Medical College of Ala- bama since 1944, has gained wide recognition for his re- search with leukemia and other diseases of the blood, hie has established high standards of medical education at the Medical College, and is internationally famous in the fields of hematology and pathology. Beginning in 1948, Dr. Joseph F. Volker served concur- rently as Dean of the Tufts College Dental School and the Alabama School of Dentistry. In September 1949, he re- signed his position at Tufts to devote his entire attention to the Alabama school. Internationally famous as an educa- tor and scientist. KRACKE . ;- SCHOOL A The University Medical Center in Birmingham, now considered the fast- est-growing medical center in the United States, is a giart enterprise engaged in training Ala- bama ' s young men and women in all phases of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and allied occupa- tions. The Medical College operates with four full classes including more than two hundred students. The School of Dentistry now includes two classes with more than a hundred students. Within the hospital and clinics are found nearly a hundred young doctors pursuing postgraduate medical education in all fields. Well over a hundred nurses are registered in the School of Nursing, technical and auxiliary personnel are being trained in increasing numbers, and hospital superin- tendents are being trained. The College has a medical, dental, and nursing school faculty of over three hundred of the finest teachers of the professions. Three new buildings ore near completion. The nation ' s most modern Public Health building is finished. The frame- work of the magnificent Crippled Children ' s Hospital now stands directly in front of the Jefferson Hospital. The enor- mous five-hundred-bed Veterans Hospital, which will be Scene in Operating Room class in Gross Anatomy
