DR. W. STANLEY HOOLE C. E. WILLIAMS DIRECTOR OF LIBRARIES Since he came to the University in 1 944, Dr. W. Stanley Hoole has held the position of Director of Libraries. Under his supervision, the libraries of the University have increased in size and scope, keeping pace with a larger enrollment. Today, the University ' s libraries include more than 350,000 books, two thousand books on micro- film, twenty-four thousand maps, fifty-five hundred phonograph records, and ninety thousand uncata- logued pamphlets and miscellaneous reports. DIRECTOR OF SUMMER SCHOOL C. E. Williams began his administrative service to the University in 1928 as Assistant Director of Summer School and since 1943 has served as Director. His office works with the various schools in planning all courses offered. Every effort is made to arrange the Summer School program in such a manner as to meet the needs of both regu- lar students and those who must do their work in Summer School alone. DIRECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY PRESS Dr. James B. McMillan has directed the Uni- versity Press since it was established in 1945. He has been a member of the University faculty since 1931, and is now the head of the Department of Linguistics. He is also a member of the advisory boards for several national language study publi- cations and dictionaries. HODNETTE FRED MAXWELL CHARLES BERNIER DIRECTOR OF NORTHINGTON Negotiator with the Government for the Uni- versity ' s acquisition of the former Northington General Hospital, on installation valued at five million dollars, was Colonel L. P. Hodnette. As Assistant to the President at Northington, he is director of the 150-acre campus which has a housing capacity for 240 families and approxi- mately a thousand single students. CONSULTING ENGINEER Professor Fred Maxwell, acting in the capacity of University Consulting Engineer since 1945, has carried out one of the most extensive expansion programs in the history of the University of Ala- bama. Among his most recent projects have been the renovation of Woods, Clark, Garland, and Manly hialls, erection of the new Physics Building, four new women ' s dormitories, three men ' s dormi- tories in Ridgecrest, the new Engineering Building, and the opening of six new roads serving the Cap- stone. ALUMNI DIRECTOR Charles Bernier directs alumni affairs at the University of Alabama and has the responsibility of handling all relations between the University and its alumni. Mr. Bernier is editor of the Alumni News. While serving as Athletic Director and head coach of basketball and baseball at the University in 1920, Bernier initiated Homecoming which is still celebrated annually at the Capstone. Page 25

AUDITORS Louis D. and Mrs. Louise Boylan hove been Auditors at the Universi- ty since 1941 v hen they ere in- vited to estoblish an office here as independent public accountants to serve the various organizations and publications on the campus. They act as financial and house manage- ment advisors and have developed an accounting system which has been unique in its success. While operating under this uniform sys- tem the social organizations here have retired in excess of $200,000 in mortgages in nine years. Due to the increased demand for this serv- ice, four full-time employees have been added to the staff to facilitate the v ork of this office. THE BOYLANS UNIVERSITY NEWS BUREAU Press agent duties for the University of Alabama are carried out by the University News Bureau, of which J. Russell Heitman is director. Mr. Heitman, who is also field manager of the Alabama Press As- sociation, on informative and advertising center for State weekly newspapers, assumed leadership of these units July 1, 1948. Associated with Mr. Heitman is Norman H. Bassett, Associate Director of the News Bureau who has been on the University staff since 1946. A student staff is maintained. The News Bureau is the primary outlet for infor- mation about the University to the press of the State. The purpose of the Alabama Press Association is to serve as a clearing house for information and adver- tising for Alabama newspapers. Two statewide conventions and a number of dis- trict meetings ore held by APA for publishers each year. The Alabama Publisher, a quarterly magazine, has been initiated by Field Manager Heitman as the official publication of APA. Bassett, Heitman, and student assistants.
