ERNEST G. WILLIAMS WILLIAM E. PICKENS, JR. ACTING TREASURER Ernest G. Williams began working in the Treas- urer ' s Office as a student assistant, and today as Acting Treasurer he handles the investment of all University funds. He also handles all of the Vet- eran ' s Administration billing pertaining to the University. Besides his administrative duties, Mr. Williams also serves as the faculty adviser of Quadrangle, of which he is a former member. The office, established as a service to the student and the University, controls all student financial records. COMPTROLLER William E. Pickens, Jr., became a member of the University administrative staff in 1931 as Chief Accountant, and since 1943 has served as Comp- troller. In this capacity he directs the budgeting and accounting for the entire University. He is a graduate of the University with a B.S. degree in Commerce. LAND COMMISSIONER As University Attorney and Lend Commissioner, Clifton H. Penick has the administration of 26,000 acres of University lands. This office also has charge of the Ann Jordan Farm of five thousand acres in Coosa County. In his tenth year as Land Commissioner, Mr. Penick is Secretary-Treasurer of the Gorges Memorial, a member of the com- mittee in charge of the University Retirement Sys- tem, and Secretary of the Board of Trustees. i CLIFTON H. i. WILLIAM F. ADAMS ROBERT EARL TIDWELL DEAN OF ADMISSIONS AND RECORDS DEAN OF THE EXTENSION DIVISION Dean William F. Adams directs the Office of Ad- missions and Records, which maintains records for students in all schools and colleges of the University. Dean Adams is Chairman of the Class Schedule Committee and is in charge of all notices of holidays, class dismissals, and deferred examinations. In addi- tion to this, he supervises the mailing of grades at the end of each quarter and is in charge of mailing bulletins to prospective and active students. Dean Adams also directs field representatives who travel the state as informative agents for prospective stu- dents. A graduate of the University, Dean Adams form- erly served on the staff of the Mathematics Depart- ment. He has been Dean since 1946. Dr. Robert Earl Tidwell has directed the Extension Division for twenty years. He has served as Princi- pal of Ensley High School, State Superintendent of Education, and was for five years Director of the Educational Training Program for T. C. I. Dean Tidwell directs four University Centers located in Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Gadsden, serving citi- zens of the State who are not able to attend the Uni- versity in residence. Other departments of the Extension Division are Commerce and Engineering, Home and Family Life, High School Counseling and Guidance, Correspondence Study, Audio-Visual Aids, Club Study and Library Loan, Adult Education, Radio Broadcasting Service, and University News Bureau, all under Dean Tidwell ' s Supervision. HODNETTE FRED MAXWELL CHARLES BERNIER DIRECTOR OF NORTHINGTON Negotiator with the Government for the Uni- versity ' s acquisition of the former Northington General Hospital, on installation valued at five million dollars, was Colonel L. P. Hodnette. As Assistant to the President at Northington, he is director of the 150-acre campus which has a housing capacity for 240 families and approxi- mately a thousand single students. CONSULTING ENGINEER Professor Fred Maxwell, acting in the capacity of University Consulting Engineer since 1945, has carried out one of the most extensive expansion programs in the history of the University of Ala- bama. Among his most recent projects have been the renovation of Woods, Clark, Garland, and Manly hialls, erection of the new Physics Building, four new women ' s dormitories, three men ' s dormi- tories in Ridgecrest, the new Engineering Building, and the opening of six new roads serving the Cap- stone. ALUMNI DIRECTOR Charles Bernier directs alumni affairs at the University of Alabama and has the responsibility of handling all relations between the University and its alumni. Mr. Bernier is editor of the Alumni News. While serving as Athletic Director and head coach of basketball and baseball at the University in 1920, Bernier initiated Homecoming which is still celebrated annually at the Capstone. Page 25
